Kenya Police Criminal Investigation Department

Kenya Police Criminal Investigation Department is a unit of Kenya Police responsible for investigating complex cases. It is commonly referred to by the initials CID. It is headed by a Director who reports to the Inspector General of Police. Due to the sensitivity of the position, the Director of the CID is appointed by the President of Kenya. The current Director is Muhoro Ndegwa, senior Deputy Commissioner of Police. Before his appointment he was previously the in-charge the Police Academy in Karen in the outskirts of Nairobi.The CID headquarters are located on Kiambu Road, Nairobi.

This department is further divided into sub-departments, namely:

• Flying Squad
• Anti Banking Fraud Unit
• Special Crime Prevention Unit
• Anti Terrorism Unit
• Ballistics Unit
• Anti Narcotics Unit
• Bomb Squad
• Cyber forensics
• Forensic Department
• Kanga Squad

In every province, the CID department is headed by a Provincial Criminal Investigation Officer (PCIO) who reports to the Provincial Police Officer (PPO). At Divisional level, the CID department is headed by a Divisional Criminal Investigation Officer (DCIO) who reports to the Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD). While Kenya's CID Department is tasked primarily with intelligence gathering where crimes have occurred. However, it has been dodged with numerous problems including lack on modern forensic laboratories, fingerprint identification equipment and DNA testing equipment. Also there has been bad blood between the department's detectives and uniformed officers. but early this month, the CID announced tender for the construction of a 5.7 billion Kenya shillings forensics lab at its headquarters in Kiambu. The project is expended to be complete by 2017.
