Lewis Kinsella (born 2 September 1994) is an English professional footballer who plays as a defender for Premier League club Aston Villa.

Career

Born in Watford, Hertfordshire,[2] Kinsella spent eight years in the Arsenal youth system,[3] before moving to Aston Villa in 2011.[4] During the 2011–12 season, Kinsella played in all but one of Villa's matches during their NextGen Series debut, scoring once in a 2–1 group stage win over Fenerbahçe.[4] However, the club were ultimately eliminated in the quarter-finals.[4] Despite missing the group games of the competition during the 2012–13 season through injury, Kinsella later returned and became established in the squad, helping the club to win the NextGen Series for the first time.[4] He first came to the attention of the Villa senior team management when Tim Sherwood replaced Paul Lambert as manager.[5] After an injury crisis, many predicted Kinsella would make his debut in an away match against Newcastle United on 28 February 2015,[6] but he did not feature.[7] He was named in a matchday squad for the first time one week later, remaining an unused substitute in Villa's 2–0 win over rivals West Bromwich Albion in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.[4][8][9] He was also an unused substitute in two Premier League matches against Sunderland and Swansea City during March 2015.[4][9][10][11]

On 26 March 2015, Kinsella joined League Two club Luton Town on loan until the end of the 2014–15 season.[12] He made his professional debut two days later, playing the full 90 minutes of a 2–1 away defeat to Northampton Town.[13][14] Kinsella played another full 90 minutes in Luton's next match, a 3–2 home defeat to Exeter City on 3 April 2015.[15] However, he did not feature again until the final day of the season as a 79th-minute substitute for Scott Griffiths in a 2–0 home win over Stevenage on 2 May 2015.[16]

Following his return to parent club Aston Villa, Kinsella signed a new one-year contract in June 2015.[17]

On 18 February 2016, Kinsella joined National League club Kidderminster Harriers on a one-month loan deal.[18] He made six first-team appearances before extending his loan with the club on 21 March 2016 until the end of the 2015–16 season.[19] In total, Kinsella made 13 first-team appearances for Kidderminster during his loan spell.[20]

On 11 May 2016, Kinsella announced Aston Villa had not offered him a new contract and he would leave at the end of the season after five years at the club.[21]
