"Lincoln County" is a song by British musician Dave Davies, who is best known as the guitarist for the rock band The Kinks. It was his third single.

Recording

"Lincoln County" was recorded during the sessions of The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society, and, like "Death of a Clown" and "Susannah's Still Alive", featured all of the members of The Kinks participating.[1]

Release

Dave Davies said of the song's release: "'Lincoln County' was a bit of a mix-up. It was put out, then withdrawn, then it was put out again, and withdrawn again! By the time it really DID come out, third time lucky, it was unlucky. It was too late - no television, no radio, no nothing. The problem hadn't been with the record ... but the difficulty was over when exactly a new Kinks' single was due out. We didn't want the two to clash."[2] "Lincoln County" was initially released as a single in June 1968, backed with "There Is No Life Without Love". Unlike the previous two Dave Davies singles ("Death of a Clown" and "Susannah's Still Alive"), the single flopped internationally, only hitting #15 on the Dutch Singles Chart and missing the charts elsewhere. After this failure, Davies would only release one more single ("Hold My Hand") before putting his solo career on hiatus until 1980 with his album Dave Davies (commonly referred to as AFL1-3603.)

"Lincoln County" was scheduled to appear on the album A Hole in the Sock of (Dave Davies), but it was never released. It has since appeared on The Album That Never Was and on some CD reissues of Something Else by The Kinks.

Reception

"Lincoln County" has generally received positive reviews from critics. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic cited the song as a highlight from the Dave Davies compilation album Hidden Treasures.[3] Richie Unterberger, also of AllMusic, called the track a highlight from The Album That Never Was.[4] Author Andy Miller called the single "fabulous."[1]
