Opened July 27, 1915, this library in the Puerto Rico was the first building to be built there for the specific purpose of a public library. In 1965, it was closed due to disrepair. It reopened in 1969. September 18, 1989, Hurricane Hugo severely damaged the library, resulting in $975,000 worth of books to be lost. It did not reopen again until 1995[2]

Notes

  1. 1.0 1.1 At various times, Bobinski and Jones disagree on these numbers. In these cases, Jones' numbers have been used due to both a more recent publication date and a more detailed gazetteer of branch libraries, which are often where the discrepancies occur.
