The Google Doodle is an artistic version of the Google logo. Google Doodles represent events like holidays, anniversaries, or current events. Some of the doodles were limited to Google's country specific home pages while others appeared globally.

On this opening day of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, the Google Doodle featured ideographics of six types of sports, one above each letter of the name "Google" in the six colours of the rainbow, and which linked to the search results for Olympic Charter. The 4th fundamental principle of Olympianism from the charter was quoted below the search bar.

It was speculated in some press reports that this Doodle was a show of non-verbal solidarity with gay rights activists, although Google specifically refused to acknowledge it.[12]

Google India celebrated the 135th anniversary of Sarojini Naidu's birthday.[13]

Google celebrated Valentine's Day with two Doodles (one for the United States and another for international visitors).[14] The doodles were interactive – the US version included candy hearts, which when clicked displayed animated love stories developed in collaboration with Ira Glass;[15] for international visitors a different doodle included a chocolate maker contraption that allowed creating and mixing chocolates, along with a hyperlink for the custom box of chocolates which could be sent as an 'e-treat' to recipients.[16]

To commemorate the 112th anniversary of John Steinbeck's birthday, Google displayed an interactive doodle utilizing animation which included illustrations portraying scenes and quotes from several novels by the author.[17][18][19]

Google in United Kingdom celebrates Saint David's Day

March 5

Google celebrated the 318th birthday of Italian painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo with a doodle inspired by Tiepolo's work, particularly his 1739 fresco The Institution of the Rosary.[20]

On the eve of International Women's Day, Google celebrated with an interactive doodle displaying 27 female gender symbols, i.e. Venus symbols, and a video featuring more than 100 women of the world with music by Zap Mama.[21][22]

Google celebrated Saint Patrick's Day with a doodle rendered as stained glass, which had a significant portion in various shades of green and included a Claddagh symbol (two hands clasping a heart surmounted by a crown, replacing the two letter o's in Google).[23]

For the spring equinox or first day of spring, Google celebrated with an animation of a person walking across the search bar while pouring a watering can, resulting in seeds sprouting, growing into plants and flowers blossoming to form the doodle.[24][25]

Google celebrated the 54th anniversary of the birthday of Ayrton Senna—a three times Formula One world championship winner—with a doodle featuring an illustration of Senna and his racing car using mostly colors of his helmet. This doodle was shown globally except for in the U.S. or U.K.[26][27]

On the 102nd anniversary of abstract expressionist artist and National Medal of Arts laureate Agnes Martin's birthday, Google celebrated with an abstract art doodle wherein the lettering of the normal logo was replaced by muted vertical lines.[28]

In celebration of the 102nd anniversary of the birthday of Dorothy Height—public service administrator, educator, civil rights and women's rights activist, recipient of both a Presidential Medal of Freedom and a Congressional Gold Medal—Google featured a doodle with a portrait of Ms. Height above protestors marching with signs.[29][30][31]

In Australia, Bangladesh, Denmark, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom, Google celebrated finals of the International Cricket Council (ICC) 2014 Twenty20 World Cup with a doodle replacing the letters of the standard logo with six illustrations—three of cricketers in action (bowling, batting, fielding), one each of supporters or fans cheering, scattered stumps and a cricket ball being tossed.[32][33]

On the 115th anniversary of Percy Julian's birthday, Google commemorated Dr. Julian—American research chemist and pioneer in synthesis of medicinal drugs from plants—along with his work in a doodle displaying chemical structures of cortisone obtained from soybean and physostigmine derived from Calabar bean, and various laboratory equipment.[34][35][36]

  • Google India celebrated the 123rd anniversary of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar's birthday.
  • Google in Algeria, Andorra, Bahrain, Chad, Djibouti, Egypt, Gibratlar, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Spain, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates honors Averroes on his 888th birthday.

In the United Kingdom, Google celebrated the 63rd anniversary of the Peak District—Britain's first national park.[37][38]

To celebrate the 198th anniversary of Charlotte Brontë's birthday, Google featured a doodle with an illustration based on the novel Jane Eyre—the doodle was displayed in Algeria, Australia, Bahrain, Chad, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Ireland, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Lithuania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom.[39][40][41]

Google celebrated the 44th anniversary of Earth Day with a doodle featuring five animations of different species -- dung beetle, moon jellyfish, puffer fish, Japanese macaques, Rufous hummingbird and veiled chameleon. Also included was a link to a photo sharing project on Google+ tagged as #MyBeautifulEarth.[42][43][44]

Google celebrated St. George's Day in the United Kingdom with a "watercolor" doodle featuring a depiction of Saint George as a knight wielding a lance, mounted on a steed rearing, battling a towering fire-breathing dragon in a dreary forest scene.[45][46][47]

In celebration of the 156th anniversary of Max Planck's birthday, Google displayed a doodle in Algeria, Austria, Bahrain, Chad, Djibouti, Egypt, Germany, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Lithuania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Somalia, Switzerland, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates including the Planck relation used in quantum mechanics.[48][49][50]

To celebrate the 117th anniversary of Pixinguinha's birthday, Google Brasil featured a doodle with an illustration of him playing saxophone with logo letters appearing to flow out from the instrument.[51][52][53]

Google South Africa marked Freedom Day, twenty years after the country's first general election after the end of apartheid. The doodle depicts people celebrating and local arts and culture.[54]

Google in the Netherlands celebrated the first King's Day.

Google India celebrated the 95th anniversary of tabla Ustad Alla Rakha's birthday with a doodle consisting of an illustration of him playing a tabla (comprising the two letter o's).[55]

Google South Africa marked the country's fifth election with universal adult suffrage with a doodle replacing the letter "g" in the search engine's logo with a marked ballot paper and a ballot box decorated with the flag of South Africa.[56][57]

Google honored mothers on Mother's Day with a doodle showing mothers and children spending time outdoors.

Google celebrated the 104th birth anniversary of Dorothy HodgkinNobel Prize–winning biochemist, x-ray crystallographer, and discoverer of the structure of vitamin B12, insulin and penicillin—with a doodle of the molecular model of penicillin.[58][59][60][61]

In India, Google observed election results day with a doodle replacing the letter 'l' by an extended inked index finger.[62]

Google celebrated the 40th anniversary of Rubik's Cube invention with an interactive doodle of a playable, virtual game cube, and additional feature allowing high scores (fewest moves required to solve puzzle) to be shared on social networking sites.[63][64]

On the 215th anniversary of the birthday of paleontologist Mary Anning, Google celebrated with a doodle featuring an illustration of her collecting fossils (arranged to spell Google in the background).[65][66][67]

On the 107th anniversary of the birthday of marine biologist and conservationist Rachel Louise Carson, Google celebrated with a doodle featuring an illustration of her surrounded by a variety of species that dwell within the marine ecosystem.[68]

Google celebrates the Philippines Independence Day with a logo referring to "Bayanihan," a Filipino tradition where members of a community help a family move by literally carrying their house to a new place.

Google celebrates the World Cup with doodles every day. The June 17 doodle featured Paul the Octopus in heaven, above the clouds, contemplating on which country will win on that day's match. On June 27, 2014, July 2, 2014, July 3, 2014, July 6, 2014, July 7, 2014, July 10, 2014, and July 11, 2014, no doodles appeared on Google's homepages and the Google logo was normal on all pages because no matches were held on those days. However, the doodle for July 10, 2014 appeared exclusively in Argentina and showed the logo in light blue cheering for Argentina.

The doodle for the World Cup Final on July 13 depicted the letters of the Google logo playing a game, with a large video board surrounded by stands featuring the national flags of all 32 participating countries. The default image on the video board is an enlarged view of the logo at play. Clicking on certain features brought up special images on the video board:

  • The pitch: If any other image is shown on the video board, it is replaced by the default image.
  • Any national flag: Images of letters depicted as "fans" in the stands, shown in that country's national colors and with the main letters corresponding to that country's FIFA code. The ticker on the bottom of the video board shows popular World Cup-related Google searches from that country.
  • The video board: Scrolls through all of the country-specific images above.
  • Clouds (upper left): Paul the Octopus "cheers" on the final from heaven.
  • Christ the Redeemer (upper right) Daytime and nighttime images of Brazil, with the sun and moon forming one "O" in "Google".

Google celebrated Fathers' Day with a World Cup-themed doodle (featuring a big "O" as a father and a little "o" as a child going to the World Cup) in 18 countries:[73] Argentina, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Czech Republic, France, Greece, India, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Netherlands, Panama, Slovakia, the United Kingdom, the United States and Venezuela. However, the Philippines showed a Google doodle in the same painting style as the 2014 Mother's Day doodle, featuring fathers and children spending time outdoors.

Google celebrated South African president and peace activist Nelson Mandela's 96th birthday with an interactive Google Doodle honoring his life.[74]

Labeled "Holidays 2014" on the official Doodle archive site, the series was described by its creator Matt Cruickshank as a celebration of the variety of ways people travel during the Christmas and holiday season.[128][129] When clicked, the Doodles linked to a search results page for "’Tis the season".
