The Walking Dead is an American television series based on the comic book of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard, and developed for television by Frank Darabont. It premiered on the cable network AMC on October 31, 2010.[1] The series focuses on Rick Grimes, a sheriff's deputy who slips into a coma after being shot. He awakens to find himself in a dangerous new world that has been overrun by "walkers". He joins a group of survivors (including his wife and son) as they try to survive in a world among the undead.[2]

On October 30, 2015, the series was renewed for a 16-episode seventh season and will premiere in October 2016.[3] As of April 3, 2016, 83 episodes of The Walking Dead have aired, concluding the sixth season.

Morgan's wife, Jenny, was bitten and resurrected but Morgan let her go. Rick encourages Morgan to put down Jenny, but he can't gather the strength. Rick finds Atlanta filled with walkers and gets trapped inside a tank. Alone and losing hope, Rick hears a voice on the radio.

After Merle provokes and then assaults black group member T-Dog, Rick restrains him and masterminds an escape, surmising that walker guts can camouflage their scent from walkers. He and Glenn smear themselves in walker guts, safely wade through the horde in the street, and return to rescue the group. In the chaos, Merle and the gun bag are abandoned.

Lori warns Shane to avoid her and Carl, believing that Shane lied about Rick's death to take his place. Angry, Shane brutally beats Carol's abusive husband Ed. Rick feels guilty and leads Glenn and Merle's younger brother Daryl on a rescue mission back to Atlanta, where they discover a bloody saw and Merle's severed hand.

Inspired by a forgotten dream, Jim digs dozens of graves. In Atlanta, Daryl finds evidence that Merle cauterized his wound and fled. Meanwhile, Glenn is captured by a Latino gang. After a shootout nearly ensues, Rick learns that the gang is protecting seniors in a nursing home and gifts them several weapons. Jim reveals that walkers ate his family. That night, walkers attack the camp. Rick, Daryl, and Glenn return and kill them, but are too late to prevent losses, including Andrea's sister Amy. Jim remembers his dream.

After burying their dead, Shane blames Rick for leaving the camp vulnerable to attack. Jim reveals that he was bitten, spreading panic within the group. Rick proposes moving to the CDC, hopeful of a cure, but Shane is opposed. While they debate privately in the woods, Shane considers shooting Rick, but thinks better of it and conforms to Rick's plan. They leave Jim, who wants to join his family as a walker, and arrive at the CDC. Rick pleads for their lives and the door opens.

In a flashback, Shane attempts to rescue Rick from the hospital but mistakenly presumes him dead. The group enters the CDC in search of answers but find only one scientist left. Dr. Edwin Jenner reveals the brain scan of an infected patient, showing the disease to be incurable. Jenner locks the group inside and reveals that the building will self-detonate. After losing his wife, the subject of the brain scan, Jenner nihilistically believes that suicide is best. Rick learns a secret from Jenner and persuades him to let them escape. Andrea and Jacqui stay behind but Dale convinces Andrea to leave with him. Jenner and Jacqui await a painless death while Rick leads the group on.

Meanwhile, Andrea blames Dale for taking her suicide opportunity at the CDC. Dale withholds her gun from her. Shane resents Rick for usurping his leadership over the group and his intimacy with Lori and Carl and plans to leave. Rick and Daryl lead a mass search effort for Sophia. Rick prays for a sign that he is leading the group on the right path. Minutes later, Carl is shot.

Otis, the accidental shooter, directs Rick to a farmstead owned by veterinarian Hershel Greene. Hershel stabilizes Carl but requires further medical supplies to operate. Otis leads Shane to a local FEMA shelter to retrieve the supplies for Carl, but they become trapped inside by a walker horde.

Shane returns alone with the medical supplies, claiming that Otis sacrificed himself. Hershel saves Carl. In a flashback, Shane sacrifices Otis and leaves him as bait so that he can escape. Otis rips out a clump of Shane's hair in a failed last-ditch effort. Shane shaves his head.

The group mourns Otis. Shane wrestles with his decision while training Andrea to shoot. Glenn accompanies Maggie to a local pharmacy, where they impulsively have sex. After searching for Sophia, Daryl gives Carol a gift: a Rose flower that gave hope to the grieving Cherokee mothers on the trail of tears. Lori learns that she is pregnant.

Shane pushes Rick to abandon the search for Sophia but Rick refuses, feeling personally responsible. While searching for Sophia, Daryl falls down a steep cliff and becomes severely injured. After stomaching abuse from Merle in various hallucinations, Daryl pulls himself up the slope and returns to the farm. Hershel grows unnerved with the group's presence and bids them to leave soon. Glenn discovers that Hershel is hiding walkers in the barn.

Glenn sits nervously on the secrets of Lori's pregnancy and the barn walkers. He eventually spills them to Dale, who learns that some of the barn walkers are Hershel's family. Glenn and Maggie return to the pharmacy to retrieve supplies for Lori but Maggie is attacked by a walker. Shane threatens Dale when he probes the story of Otis' death. Lori grapples alone with her pregnancy but Rick finds out and confronts her. She reveals the affair with Shane and Rick accepts it.

Glenn reveals the barn to the group. Shane is furious, urging the group to kill the walkers or abandon the farm. Rick confronts Hershel, who believes the walkers to be curable. After her encounter at the pharmacy, Maggie opposes this view. In love with Glenn, she discourages Hershel from exiling Rick's group. Rick reveals Lori's pregnancy to Shane, who becomes unhinged and overprotective. Dale foresees Shane's actions and tries to hide the gun bag in the swamp, but Shane follows and steals it back. Hershel takes Rick to capture walkers for the barn, but Shane shoots them and proves that they are incurable. Shane opens the barn and massacres the walkers inside. The final walker is Sophia. While the others are frozen, Rick steps forward and puts her down.

The group mourns their losses. Beth collapses into a catatonic shock at the loss of her mother, who was in the barn. Meanwhile, Hershel flees to the local bar in town, relapsing into old drinking habits to mask his guilt and hopelessness. Lori learns that Shane sacrificed Otis. She tries to rescue Rick and Hershel herself but crashes her car. Rick and Glenn find Hershel and convince him to return to the farm but two strangers, Dave and Tony, enter the bar and aggressively question them. Rick is forced to kill them.

Shane rescues Lori and, in love with her, argues that they should be together. At the bar, Dave and Tony's friends investigate the gunfire. Rick attempts to negotiate but a shootout ensues. The enemy group leaves, abandoning an injured teenager named Randall. Rick saves him and brings him back to the farm, where the group debates whether Randall poses a threat. Shane predicts a violent conflict with Randall's group. Lori fears Shane and urges Rick to confront him.

Rick confronts Shane for killing Otis and for advancing on Lori. Shane apologizes and seemingly submits. They move to exile Randall, but he reveals that he knows Maggie and Hershel. As they dispute Randall's fate, Shane contends that Rick can't protect the group and they fight. The brawl unleashes a pack of walkers. Rick is tempted to abandon Shane but rescues him and offers him a second chance. Meanwhile, Lori and Maggie try to inspire a suicidal Beth. Andrea lets Beth make her attempt and she changes her mind.

Daryl tortures Randall and learns that he is from a large group of unruly men. In a rare occasion, Rick and Shane agree that he must be executed. Dale tries to convince them to spare Randall, probing the group's humanity, but he and Daryl see that the group is broken. Meanwhile, Carl steals a gun and aims to shoot a walker in the swamps but gets scared and flees. The group votes to execute Randall, but Rick refuses when Carl encourages it. Dale is gutted by the walker from the swamps. Daryl mercifully puts him down.

Rick vows to honor Dale by "unbreaking" the group. Carl avoids his gun and regrets Dale's fate, but Rick encourages him to protect himself. Lori thanks Shane for saving her and Carl during Rick's coma. Rick and Daryl plan to abandon Randall, but Shane, moved by Lori's speech, kills him and frames it as an escape attempt. Daryl and Glenn find Randall as a walker despite having no bites. Meanwhile, Shane leads Rick deep into the woods to kill him, but Rick stabs Shane and blames him for forcing this upon them. Carl finds Rick mourning at Shane's body. To Rick's surprise, Shane reanimates, and Carl puts him down. The gunshot draws a local horde of walkers towards the farm.

Rick and Carl escape the walker horde. Hershel leads an effort to defend the farm but is forced to evacuate. Andrea becomes separated from the group and meets a mysterious hooded woman. The group reunites on the highway, where Daryl reveals Randall's fate. The group poses questions. Rick reveals that everyone is infected and will reanimate after death, as was reported by Jenner at the CDC. The group is shaken by Rick's secrecy and question his leadership. Rick reveals that he killed Shane, upsetting Lori and Carl, and invites everyone to leave. When they stay, he declares himself dictator. In the distance, the prison looms.

After enduring the winter on the road, the group has hardened and united firmly under Rick's leadership. He and Carl have withdrawn from Lori after her unjust response to Shane's death. When they discover a prison, Rick and Daryl lead the group inside to clear it of walkers. Hershel is bitten on the ankle. As Rick amputates his leg to try save him, they discover five convicts surviving inside. Meanwhile, an ailing Andrea is cared for Michonne, the hooded woman.

Rick lays claim to the prison and tries to strike a deal with the convicts, but their leader Tomas proves too aggressive. Rick kills him and leaves his friend Andrew to be eaten by walkers. After being treated by Carol and Lori, Hershel wakes, proving that Rick's amputation saved him from the bite.

Andrea and Michonne are drawn to a helicopter crash, where they are captured by Merle. The Governor tracks the helicopter to a remaining group of soldiers and ambushes them, stealing their weaponry and claiming their heads as trophies.

Michonne tries to convince Andrea to leave Woodbury while Merle presses her for information on Daryl. At the prison, walkers are unleashed upon the group. T-Dog is bit and sacrifices himself so that Carol can escape, but she presumably dies too. Oscar and Axel help Rick, Daryl, and Glenn search for the others. They find Andrew, who survived and sought revenge upon them, but Oscar kills him. Meanwhile, Lori goes into labor and becomes trapped within the tombs. Maggie is forced to perform a fatal C-section to save the baby. Carl shoots Lori to prevent reanimation. As the survivors regroup, Rick is devastated.

Woodbury throws a party to celebrate their success, culminating in a caged fight between Merle and Martinez. The Governor locks his daughter Penny, a walker, inside his room. Michonne rebels, forcing the Governor to exile her from Woodbury. Andrea decides to stay. At the prison, the survivors mourn their losses. Daryl and Maggie find powdered formula to feed Lori's baby. Rick grows unhinged and goes on a walker killing rampage. He hears a telephone ring and answers.

Rick entertains imaginary phone calls with other survivors, wrestling with his failure to provide a safe shelter for the group. Meanwhile, he sends Merle to assassinate Michonne, but she escapes. The two later converge with Glenn and Maggie, who are gathering baby formula. Merle captures Glenn and Maggie and returns to Woodbury, where he lies to the Governor about Michonne's fate. Michonne arrives at the prison with the baby formula.

Tyreese, a burly survivor, leads his group into the backside of the prison, where Carl rescues them. Michonne guides Rick's party into Woodbury, where they trigger a shootout to rescue Glenn and Maggie. Unbeknownst to both sides, the conflict pits Merle and Andrea against Rick, Daryl and Michonne. Oscar is killed and Daryl is captured. Michonne ditches Rick and confronts the Governor in a violent brawl. She wounds his eye, kills Penny, and exposes his psychopathy to Andrea. As revenge for sparing Michonne, the Governor contends Merle against Daryl in a cage fight.

Rick and Maggie rescue Daryl and Merle, but Glenn forbids Merle from returning to the prison. Unable to abandon his brother again, Daryl leaves with him. Rick promises to exile Michonne for abandoning them in Woodbury. Glenn presumes that the Governor raped Maggie and blames Rick for not targeting him. Woodbury is in a panic after the shootout. While the Governor has seemingly abandoned his post, Andrea restores order. Hershel tries to persuade Rick to let Tyreese's group join them, but Rick hallucinates a vision of Lori and becomes unhinged.

Merle is shaken to learn that Daryl was similarly abused by their father yet did not become poisoned with resentment and self-interest. Daryl leaves Merle and returns to the prison. The Governor attacks the prison, killing Axel and flooding the field with walkers.

The Governor kills Merle and leaves him to reanimate. Daryl discovers him and puts him down.

The Governor kills Milton in Andrea's cell, where he turns and bites her. Woodbury's army attacks the prison but flees in fear as Rick leads an ambush. Carl kills a surrendering soldier, terrifying Rick. Furious at their retreat, The Governor massacres his army and leaves with Martinez. Karen survives and leads Rick back to Woodbury, where Michonne consoles Andrea before her suicide. Rick welcomes the Woodbury citizens to the prison, healing his guilt from Lori's death.

Rick's group has brought the survivors from Woodbury into the prison, and Rick has renounced leadership of the group. The prison has proven a haven for many months, while Michonne continues to search for The Governor, fearing his retribution. Patrick, one of new survivors comes down with a fatal illness, dies, and reanimates as a walker.

The reanimated Patrick manages to attack other survivors in a cell block, and the group is forced to kill off those bitten and relocate the others to a different block. They discover a deadly flu strain, brought by pigs that Rick tried to raise, affecting some of the survivors and which killed Patrick. Those infected are isolated, fearing they will reanimate when they die. Tyreese discovers his girlfriend Karen and her friend David, both considered infected, were killed and burnt by someone unknown.

The illness continues to spread and Hershel takes responsibility to stay with the infected to tend to them. Daryl leads a group to a nearby veterinary college to recover medicine to cure the illness, though en route, overhear a radio broadcast directing people to "sanctuary". Rick discovers Carol killed Karen and David, acting on her own but for the good of the survivors.

Daryl's group completes their run to the hospital, while Rick and Carol go scavenging for supplies at a local residential area. After trying to help a couple return to the prison, only to have the wife die and the husband disappear. Rick tells Carol that she cannot come back to the prison and the two depart on separate ways.

The infected survivors begin to succumb to the illness and reanimate as walkers, forcing the survivors to start to kill their friends. Daryl's group returns in time for Hershel and Bob to help administer the medicine and cure the remaining infected. Carol's absence from the group is noticed but Rick only confides in his choice to a select few. As the survivors recover and try to return to a regular routine, they are unaware they are being watched from afar by The Governor.

In a flashback episode, The Governor is abandoned by Martinez and Shumpert following his attack on the prison. He sets Woodbury ablaze and later encounters the Chamblers, Lilly, Tara, Lilly's daughter Meghan and their dying father. He hides his identity while helping them to deal with their father and the three opt to leave with him when he moves on. They come across another group of survivors - this being led by Martinez.

While still in flashback, Martinez recognizes The Governor has taken a new identity and privately explains how he found this new group and their arsenal of weapons. He kills Martinez and his right-hand man, taking charge of the group and organizes the group to head to the prison. The Governor, observing the prison, sees Michonne and Hershel outside its fence, burning the corpses of the infected.

The Governor captures Michonne and Hershel and challenges Rick and the others to abandon the prison. Though Rick offers co-existence, The Governor refuses, decapitates Hershel and gunfire breaks out. In the midst of battle, Lilly rushes up to The Governor with the body of Meghan, who was bitten by a walker while playing. The Governor shoots Meghan to prevent her from reanimating and then orders a full-out assault of the prison, tearing through its fences and allowing a horde of walkers in. The survivors in the prison are forced to scatter when they no longer can hold their defenses. At the same time, Rick and The Governor engage in a one-on-one brawl in which the latter gains the upper hand, only to be mortally stabbed by Michonne just before he can kill Rick. Rick escapes with Carl, while the near-death Governor is approached and executed by Lilly.

Carl helps his injured father Rick as they flee the prison and fearful they have lost Lori's child. They take shelter in a suburban home and Rick collapses from exhaustion. Michonne, finding the prison overrun and no sign of the survivors, sets off on her own but comes to an epiphany about her purpose and follows Carl and Rick's trail, rejoining them at the home where they are sheltering.

Daryl helps to protect Beth as they flee and search for survivors. Tyreese, having saved Lori's child Judith, escorts young sisters Lizzie and Mika and is soon joined by Carol. Glenn, having been knocked unconscious at the prison, finds a frightened Tara and helps to lead her to safety, coming across Abraham, Eugene and Rosita in their travels.

Beth continues to travel with Daryl and becomes distraught she might die before having a drink of alcohol, something Hershel prevented. As they get inebriated, Daryl sadly discusses his past and what Merle meant to him. They decide to burn down the cabin as a way of putting their past behind them.

While following signs to Terminus, Maggie, Sasha and Bob disagree on what they should do. Maggie, still anxious about Glenn's fate, leaves on her own. Bob leaves to follow her trail, while Sasha decides to remain in a small town and ultimately saves Maggie from a horde of walkers and agrees to continue with her. Daryl and Beth come across a church where they take refuge but when the church is invaded by walkers, Daryl covers for Beth's escape, during which she is captured by someone in a car with a white cross on its back windshield. Daryl is suddenly captured by another group of men.

Tyreese, Carol, Lizzie, Mika and Judith follow signs to Terminus and come across a cabin where they plan to take a few days of rest. Tyreese and Carol find Lizzie has an unhealthy fascination with walkers. Later, after coming back with supplies, they find Lizzie has killed Mika and is about to kill Judith, hoping they will come back as walkers. Carol and Tyreese agree Lizzie is too dangerous to keep around and Carol kills her. Carol opens up about having killed Tyreese's friend Karen, which he forgives her for. They leave the cabin and continue to Terminus.

Glenn, Tara, Abraham, Eugene and Rosita continue towards Terminus and they find a sign by a tunnel written by Maggie to Glenn. Abraham fears the tunnel too dangerous but Glenn and Tara proceed. They are surrounded by walkers but saved by Maggie, Sasha, and Bob; the combined group continue to Terminus as a waypoint towards Washington, D.C. They find Terminus and are welcomed with open arms. Daryl is forced to travel with the men that captured him, the same Claimers that Rick encountered and learns that they are on Rick's trail for having killed one of their own.

The Claimers catch up to Rick, Carl and Michonne but when they threaten to rape Michonne and Carl, they are slaughtered by Rick and Daryl. The four continue towards Terminus but Rick is wary and leaves their weapons hidden before they enter. Inside they are guided by Gareth, who welcomes them. Rick spots gear belonging to the other survivors and demands to know what is going on. Rick's group is forced into a boxcar at gunpoint where they join up with Glenn, Maggie, Sasha, Bob, Tara, Abraham, Eugene and Rosita, all also captives of the Terminus residents. Rick asserts that they have picked the wrong people to mess with.

Prior to the start of season 2, a six-episode web series called Torn Apart premiered on October 3, 2011 on AMC's official website. The web series is directed by special effects makeup artist and co-executive producer Greg Nicotero and tells the origin story of Hannah, also known as "Bicycle Girl", the walker that Rick Grimes killed out of mercy and whose bicycle he took in the first episode of the TV series.[87]

The Oath (2013)

A three-part webisode series, entitled The Oath, was released on October 1, 2013. This series tells the origin of the "Don't Open, Dead Inside" paint on the cafeteria doors of the hospital Rick Grimes awakes in, post-apocalypse. It follows Paul and Karina as they escape their zombie-overrun camp in search of a medical station. The central theme of the series examines the will to persevere in the face of inevitable death.[89]
