Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a 2015 epic space opera film directed, co-produced, and co-written by J. J. Abrams. The seventh installment in the main Star Wars film series, and first of three in Star Wars sequel trilogy, it was premiered by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in Los Angeles on December 14, and was released in United States and Canada on December 18, 2015. The Force Awakens opened across 14,300 theaters, breaking numerous box-office records including $119.1 million gross on its opening day marking the biggest single and opening day record[1] and became the first film to earn more than $100 million in a single day.[2] It grossed $248 million during its opening weekend ranking number one at the box-office[3] and went on to become the highest-grossing release of 2015, the highest-grossing film in the franchise (dethroning The Phantom Menace), the highest-grossing film released by Walt Disney Studios,[4] the highest-ever grossing film in North America, and the third-highest-grossing film of all time. The Force Awakens became the twenty-fourth film in cinematic history to surpass $1 billion worldwide,[5] standing as the fastest film to surpass the mark, doing so in twelve-days.[6][7] It became the third film in history to surpass $2 billion worldwide (after Avatar and Titanic), doing so on its 53rd day of release.[8]

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was well-received, with an approval rating of 92% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.[9] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 81 out of 100, based on 52 critics, indicating "universal acclaim".[10] The film has been universally acclaimed and has been included in many critics' Top Ten Films of 2015 lists.[11] Several awards held their nominations before the December release of The Force Awakens, making the film ineligible for the 73rd Golden Globe Awards and some other awards ceremonies.[12] However, the film was added to the 21st Critics' Choice Awards's slate of best picture nominees after a special vote by the board of directors,[13] and the announcement of the 2015 American Film Institute Awards was delayed until after the release of film,[12] where it was named one of Top Ten Films of the year.[14]

The film received five Academy Award nominations at 88th Academy Awards including, Best Original Score, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Film Editing and Best Visual Effects. The film garnered four nominations at 69th British Academy Film Awards for Best Original Music, Best Sound, Best Production Design including one win for Best Special Visual Effects and BAFTA Rising Star Award for John Boyega. It was nominated for Best Picture at 2016 Critics' Choice Awards. The film received seven Visual Effects Society Awards nominations, winning four including Outstanding Visual Effects in an Effects Driven Feature Motion Picture. It received the most nominations at the 21st Empire Awards including Best Film, Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film, Best Director for J.J. Abrams, Best Male Newcomer for John Boyega and Best Female Newcomer for Daisy Ridley. It became the most nominated film in Saturn Award history with total of 13 nominations at 42nd Saturn Awards including Best Science Fiction Film, Best Director, Best Writing, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Music and Best Special Effects.

Daisy Ridley's and John Boyega performance received universal acclaim resulting in several nomination and accolades. Both of their performances were nominated as Best Newcomers at various critics circle and associations including Alliance of Women Film Journalists, Florida Film Critics Circle and Online Film & Television Association Awards. The Force Awakens received eleven nominations at MTV Movie Awards, the most for the ceremony including Movie of the Year, Best Female Performance for Ridely, Best Breakthrough Performance for Boyega and Best Visual Performance for Lupita Nyong'o and Andy Serkis.

Notes

  1. Certain award groups do not simply award one winner. They recognize several different recipients and have runner-ups. Since this is a specific recognition and is different from losing an award, runner-up mentions are considered wins in this award tally.
