- ↑ "By the end of 2014, 112,000 km mileage of railways in commercial operation, among of which the central and western railway operating mileage is 70,000 km, or 62.3% of the total mileage of railways in operation"
- ↑ In 2014, Network Rail, which owns the railway infrastructure in Great Britain, was reclassified as a "public sector body" and its financial liabilities are now formally included as part of the national debt.[25] Much debate continues if this constitutes as the "nationalisation" of Network Rail.[citation needed] Private firms continue to operate the majority of train services under government franchises or concessions.
