Later on he was elected as the Deputy Chairman of Committees and subsequently, had the distinction of being elected as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives. The culmination of Proctor Ismail’s political career came when he was unanimously elected as the speaker in 1956, thus creating another first in the annals of Sri Lankan political history; the first Muslim speaker of the parliament of Ceylon (1956–1959)
