The Dubai Marina in Dubai, also known as the "tallest block in the world" is home to seven of the ten tallest residential buildings in the world.
Tallest residential buildings in the world.

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) defines a residential building as one where 85 percent or more of its total floor area is dedicated to residential usage.[1] CTBUH is a non-profit international organization formed in 1969 that decides which structure is officially the world's tallest residential building and sets the standards by which buildings are measured. It has maintained a list of the 100 tallest completed residential buildings in the world since 2000.[2]

The tallest residential skyscraper in the world is 432 Park Avenue in New York City, United States. It was topped out at a height of 426 metres (1,398 ft) in 2014.

The Skyscraper database of CTBUH reveals that more than 100 residential skyscrapers are under construction in the world.[3] The tallest are World One in Mumbai India, set to rise 442 metres (1,450 ft), and Diamond Tower in Jeddah Saudi Arabia, with the planned height of 432 metres (1,417 ft).

According to the press release issued by Emporis on 29 October 2013, Dubai is home to seven of the ten tallest residential skyscrapers in the world.[4][5] High-rise residential buildings are spread throughout the city but most of them are concentrated in Dubai Marina. Dubai Marina is also known as the "tallest block in the world" because of the number of high-rise residential skyscrapers.[6] The tallest planned residential skyscraper is 122 storey Pentominium, which will stand at 516 metres (1,693 ft) however the construction of this tower has been suspended since May 2011.[7][8]

History and Ranking Criteria

The Belcher's in Hong Kong were the first tallest residential skyscrapers.

Since 2000, when CTBUH started maintaining a list of tallest residential skyscrapers The Belcher's Tower 1 and The Belcher's Tower 2 located in Hong Kong were the first tallest residential skyscrapers whose heights equal 221 metres (725 ft) completed in 2000.[9][10] In 2001, Trump World Tower in New York City became the tallest residential building in the world until it was surpassed in 2003 by the 21st Century Tower in Dubai. In 2012, Princess Tower in Dubai became the tallest residential building in the world[11] before being surpassed by 432 Park Avenue in New York City in 2014. The percentage of residential buildings has been increased from 34 percent in 2009 to 45 percent in 2010 in residential skyscrapers whose height exceeds 200 metres,[12] making Burj Khalifa the world's first supertall skyscraper to include residential space.[13]

The CTBUH insist that a building should only be added to the official tallest list when it is (i) topped out structurally and architecturally, (ii) fully clad, and (iii) open for business, or at least partially open. This became the CTBUH official definition of a building’s "completion".[14]

In 1996, in response to a dispute over whether the Petronas Towers or the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) was taller, the council listed and ranked buildings in four categories: the height of the structural or architectural top, the height of the highest occupied floor, the height to the top of the roof (removed as a category in November 2009),[15] and the height to the top of any part of the building. A tall building's "tallest" rank therefore depends on its spires and antennas as well as the height of its architectural top.[16] For example, the Petronas Towers, with its spire, is ranked higher than the Willis Tower with its antennas, despite the Petronas Towers' lower roof.[17]
