The London Academy of Excellence (LAE), founded in 2012, is the first selective free school sixth form college in the London borough of Newham,[1][2] opened by the government under a new scheme which began in 2010.

Background

The school is selective as, from 2013, it interviews candidates before giving a conditional offer which depends on their GCSE results.[3] In 2012, 5 B grades were needed at GCSE. From 2013, this became 5 A*/A grades.

LAE was founded in collaboration with some of the leading independent fee-paying schools in south-east England: Brighton College, Caterham School, Eton College, City of London School, Forest School, Highgate School and University College School.

In 2015, the Sunday Times named LAE "best sixth form in the country".[4]

Academics

In 2016 eight students gained offers from Oxford University and the University of Cambridge, receiving much national media attention.[5]
