Malla Reddy is an Indian politician and a Member of Parliament from Malkajgiri, Telangana. He is a member of the Telugu Desam Party.[1]

Early life

Reddy was born on 9 September 1953 into a family that earned its livelihood from selling milk. His father, his two younger brothers and he would cycle close to 20 kilometers at dawn and sell milk to the hotels in the city. Minimal education saw to it that he could not get any job and life, therefore, was not a bed of roses. He ventured into bore well (diggings rigs) business and used to wander all over the state to attract customers. Being a person with lack of education, his dream was to establish educational institutions and extend quality and affordable education to everyone at all levels.[2]

Business career

Post the change of guard in the political scene and replacement of the grand old party in A.P. in 1984, things changed rapidly. At about this time, Reddy decided to charter a different course, one that stemmed out of his lack of education and his reverence for the learned. 1987 saw his dream taking shape in the form of owning a school in Balanagar[disambiguation needed] in a partnership with three other members. The management of the school was finding it difficult to run it and approached Reddy for help in two areas namely finance and effective management. However, Reddy was simultaneously pursuing bore well business and flower and fruit farming at his ancestral land in Maisammaguda village. He gained considerable experience in managing school education.[2]

Educationalist

By establishing the various educational societies, such as Malla Reddy Educational Society, Chandramma Educational Society, CMR Educational Society, St.Martins Education Society he founded over 19 engineering and technical colleges, two medical colleges, two dental colleges, two hospitals at Kandlakoya, Suraram, Maisammaguda and Dhulapally villages from the year 2002 starting with Malla Reddy Engineering College. As on today, these four villages in the outskirts of northern part of Hyderabad have become major learning centers with a number of institutions conducting education in Engineering, Pharmacy, MBA, MCA and medical disciplines. Above six thousand staff and fifty thousand students are being imparted employment and quality education from primary level to the post graduate level. Upon his entry into politics he resigned as the Chairman from all four educational societies, thus being relieved from his duties and so as to serve the people uninterruptedly but as a token of respect continues to be a Honorary Founder.[3]

Health City

As a first step towards establishing the Health City, Malla Reddy Hospital (a teaching hospital) and a nursing institution, Malla Reddy College of Nursing, were started in the year 2010 and 2011 respectively. Thereafter Malla Reddy Institute of Medical Sciences (MRIMS) was the first medical institution to be established in 2012 in the Health City. Shortly he has established another Medical College exclusively for women named Malla Reddy Medical College for Woman (MRMCW) and two dental colleges: Malla Reddy Institute of Dental Sciences (MRIDS) and Malla Reddy Dental College for Woman (MRDCW) from the academic year 2013-2014, thereby making him the only person in India to achieve such a feat.[4]

Political career

Reddy announced his grand entry into politics in January 2014. On 19 March 2014, he joined the Telugu Desam Party.

He received the party ticket on 9 April 2014 and on 16 May 2014 went on to be elected as member of parliament for Malkajgiri.[1] He is also the only Member of Parliament for the Telugu Desam Party in Telangana. He is going to shortly join the TRS Party. He was recently appointed as the Defence Standing Committee Member on behalf of the Cantonment Area.
