The Sea Inside (Spanish: Mar adentro) is a 2004 Spanish drama film written, produced, directed and scored by Alejandro Amenábar. It is based on the real-life story of Ramón Sampedro (played by Javier Bardem), who was left quadriplegic after a diving accident, and his 28-year campaign in support of euthanasia and the right to end his life.

Plot summary

The film explores Ramón's relationships with two women: Julia, a lawyer suffering from Cadasil syndrome, who supports his cause, and Rosa, a local woman who wants to convince him that life is worth living. Through the gift of his love, these two women are inspired to accomplish things they never previously thought possible.

The film received positive reviews from critics. It currently holds an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 131 reviews, with an average rating of 7.6/10. Its summary states: "Held aloft by a transfixing performance from Javier Bardem as a terminally ill man who chooses to die, The Sea Inside transcends its melodramatic story with tenderness and grace."^[1]

The Sea Inside won the 2004 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, the 2004 Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, and 14 Goya Awards including awards for Best Film, Best Director, Best Lead Actor, Best Lead Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay.^[2]

In 2010, New Zealand post-punk band Body 125 released a song entitled 'A Sea Inside' written in response to the film.

The 2010 Bollywood film Guzaarish featuring Hrithik Roshan and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali was an adaptation of The Sea Inside.
