Margit Bokor

Margit Bokor (2 April 1900[1] or 1 June 1905 – 9 November 1949 in New York City) was a Hungarian opera singer (soprano).

Life and career

Bokor was born in Lučenec, Kingdom of Hungary, in what was then the Hungarian Nógrád County. She took singing lessons in Budapest and Vienna. In 1928 she made her debut at the Nationaltheater in Budapest. She was engaged at the Leipzig Opera from 1928 to 1930 and at the Semperoper of Dresden from 1930 to 1933. She appeared on 16 November 1932 in Verdi's La forza del destino in which she took over the role of Donna Leonore di Vargas. In Mozart's Così fan tutte she played the role of Dorabella. In Suppè's operetta Boccaccio she played the role of Beatrice. In Wagner's Tannhäuser she played (Fritz Busch conducting)[2] Venus, and in Verdi's Don Carlos she played Elizabeth of Valois. In Strauss' opera Arabella, premiered on July 1, 1933 she took over the role of Zdenka.[3] After she returned to Vienna in 1933, she was from 1934 to 1938 solo singer at the Vienna State Opera.[4] She also played in Elektra at the 1934 Salzburg Festival .

She moved to North America in 1939, where she continued her career at large houses in New York, St. Louis, Chicago and Philadelphia. She also appeared in Rio de Janeiro as Traviata and Musetta in La Bohème. From 1947, she was a member of the ensemble of the New York City Opera.
