Marredpally is an upmarket residential suburb in the city of Secunderabad, India. It is divided into East Marredpally and West Marredpally.

History

Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found. West Marredpally was planned and developed during the British rule. The first houses were built in late 1920s and built according to plans approved by the Cantonment board, with strict compliance. It was planned in a far-sighted future ready way, with wide roads, footpaths, water supply mains, underground drainage with rain water traps placed at regular intervals on the roads. It had 24/7 water supply for residents. Roads were of bitumen, and regularly hosed down with water by the municipal authorities keeping them very clean. While water washing was discontinued later, daly morning cleaning by the municipality continued.

The buyers were mainly government officials of Tamil origin, North Indians and other upper middle class business persons, some of them being from prosperous Telugu Komti community. Roads were tree lined, with many of them now over 75 – 80 years age. The open wells in the houses had sweet water at 15 – 20 feet depth, whereas water is today found through very deep bore wells which have to be further deepened as the water table drops further. The first restaurant was the Ramser hotel, facing the Technical School. The Freemason's society also had its establishment on the approach road from Clock Tower to West Marredpally which is visible even now.

The wide roads and plot sizes of 600 square yards (corner plots a little bigger) became attractive to owners and builders to redevelop, spurring off up market multi storey apartment blocks, starting in the 70s.

Jaisimha grounds was a large open area, facing Shenoy Nursing Home. It became progressively smaller after the development of Geeta Nursing home etc., Cricket and Hockey teams played in the grounds with many spectators cheering them. The exclusive Secunderabad Club and later New Club (70s) was the main place for the evenings for their members.

Hindu temple consecrated long ago had temples for Subrahmanya Swamy, Anjaneya, Nava Graha, with Shirdi Saibaba Temple consecrated in the 70s. A large Mosque was also started long ago, and is in excellent condition. Christians attended the Christmas mass and other events at St. Mary's, St. John's Church church etc., which had large capacity pews and with altar and other places built with care and fervour.

In the 1940s and 1950s East Marredpally area was mostly open area with few houses. Like many parts oh the twin cities, they also had small hillocks, strewn with big boulders. with hills. In 1964 the first major development that spurred further development was the opening of the Shenoy Nursing Home which continues to this day.For the next twenty five years there was no other health related industry nearby.[citation needed] A lot of famous people were born here. There is a huge Buddha statue that brings serenity to the busy circle. During the late 1950s government authorities constructed houses called TIT blocks and sold them at subsidised rates to Government employees. Large pieces of land near Geeta Nursing Home was sold to IAS and IPS officers and few other businessmen.

Other parts were developed by the then Military Cantonment Board and named as "Married Officers Colony". The name originates from Mared Palle. It was also home to many Anglo-Indians. It was Yadavs who used to be the landlords, but in the early 70s settlers ranging from Tamils, North Indians and Coastal Andhras, but most of these people were living here away from the maddening crowd and which was very beautiful and green environs making it a haven for morning walkers and senior citizens looking for some peace and quiet.

In the 90s, demolition of old ancestral houses that stood there for over 100 years and the construction of apartment complexes the erstwhile suburb became the hustling bustling hub of urban Hyderabad leaving little place for the very poor that lived next door in Addagutta. The land rates in Marredpally have risen and rich or old residents are now living in the suburb.
