Martin Ryan (28 August 1923 – Script error: The function "death_date_and_age" does not exist.) was an English professional rugby league footballer of the 1940s and 1950s, playing at representative level for Great Britain, and England, and at club level for Wigan, as a Fullback, Centre, Stand-off/Five-eighth, or Scrum-half/Halfback, i.e. number 1, 3 or 4, 6, or, 7.

Playing career

International honours

Martin Ryan won caps for England while at Wigan in 1943 against Wales, in 1945 against Wales, in 1946 against France (2 matches), and Wales, in 1947 against Wales (2 matches), in 1948 against France (2 matches), in 1949 against France (2 matches), in 1950 against Wales,[1] and won caps for Great Britain while at Wigan in 1947 against New Zealand, in 1948 against Australia (2 matches), and in 1950 against Australia.[2]

Championship final appearances

Martin Ryan played Fullback, and scored a try in Wigan's 13-6 victory over Bradford Northern in the Championship final during 1951–52 season at Leeds Road, Huddersfield on Saturday 10 May 1952.[3]

County League appearances

Martin Ryan played during Wigan's victories in the Lancashire league during the 1940–41 season, 1945–46 season, 1946–47 season, 1949–50 season, and 1951–52 season.[4]

Challenge Cup final appearances

Martin Ryan played Fullback in Wigan's 8-3 victory over Bradford Northern in the Challenge Cup final during the 1947–48 season at Wembley Stadium, London on Saturday 1 May 1948.[5]

Martin Ryan played Right-Fullback in Wigan's 3-7 defeat by Widnes in the 1945 Lancashire Cup final during the 1945–46 season at Wilderspool Stadium, Warrington on Saturday 27 October 1945, played Fullback in the 9-3 victory over Belle Vue Rangers in the 1946 Lancashire Cup final during the 1946–47 season at Station Road, Swinton on Saturday 26 October 1946,[6] in the 10-7 victory over Belle Vue Rangers in the 1947 Lancashire Cup final during the 1947–48 season at Wilderspool Stadium, Warrington on Saturday 1 November 1947,[7] in the 14-8 victory over Warrington in the 1948 Lancashire Cup final during the 1948–49 season at Station Road, Swinton on Saturday 13 November 1948,[8] and in the 20-7 victory over Leigh in the 1949 Lancashire Cup final during the 1949–50 season at Wilderspool Stadium, Warrington on Saturday 29 October 1949.[9]

Club career

Martin Ryan made his début for Wigan, and scored a try in the 21-0 victory over Oldham at Watersheddings, Oldham on Saturday 21 September 1940, he scored his last Wigan try in the 13-6 victory over Bradford Northern in the Championship final during the 1951–52 season at Leeds Road, Huddersfield (Huddersfield Town F.C.) on Saturday 10 May 1952, his last match for Wigan was the 2-15 defeat to Workington Town at Borough Park, Workington on Saturday 20 September 1952.

Genealogical information

Martin Ryan was the older brother of the rugby league footballer for Warrington, Andrew "Andy" Ryan[1] (birth registered during January→March 1927 in Wigan district).
