Memorial of Tao Xingzhi (Chinese: 陶行知纪念馆; pinyin: Táo xíng zhī jìniànguǎn) — located at the foot of a small hill called "laoshan" in Qixia District, Nanjing, Jiangsu province, China[1] — was built in memory of modern Chinese scholar Tao Xingzhi. The main scenic spots are: the tomb of Tao Xingzhi, Xingzhi pavilion, and a woodland area.

History

The memorial, built in 1951,[citation needed] is a tomb and museum of the life of Tao Xingzhi.[2] It was shut down for a period, but opened again in March, 1980.[3] In 1985, the exhibition room was expanded to 400 square metres. In 1993, the memorial was moved from the university and to a site at the foot of Laoshan.

Description

The memorial is 800 square metres (8,600 sq ft) in area. The roof of the 25 metres (82 ft) building, shaped like a thatched cottage, is made from cement. Within the building is a bronze statue of Tao and two exhibition rooms, with 120 pictures, manuscripts, and more than 200 artifacts.

The memorial is managed by the Nanjing Xiaozhuang University, which was established by Tao in 1926 and first called the Xiaozhuang School, or Rural Teacher School.[2][4]
