Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy is a graduate school at The New School within The New School for Public Engagement that offers degrees in International Affairs, Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management, Nonprofit Management, Organizational Change Management, and Urban Policy, as well as a Ph.D. program in Public and Urban Policy and three post-master's certificates.

History

In 1964, the J. M. Kaplan Center for New York City Affairs was founded as the first teaching and research center in the United States devoted to the study of a single metropolitan area. In 1975, under the leadership of Dean Henry Cohen, the Kaplan Center evolved into the Robert J. Milano Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy (now the Milano School of International Affairs, Management and Urban Policy), which was named in honor of the former New School trustee Robert J. Milano (1912–2000), who had also been a member of the advisory board of the J.M. Kaplan Center. Curriculum is structured to encourage creative thinking in aid of progressive social, economic, and political change in the public, private, and nonprofit arenas.

In 2011, Milano The New School for Management and Urban Policy came together with the Graduate Program in International Affairs at The New School to create the Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy.

Milano was one of what was formerly eight divisions within The New School: The New School for Social Research, Parsons The New School for Design, The New School for General Studies, Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts, Mannes College The New School for Music, The New School for Drama, and The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. The university now offers seven divisions, following the merging of Milano The New School for Management and Urban Policy and The New School for General Studies into The New School for Public Engagement.

The Center for New York City Affairs

The Center for New York City Affairs is a nonpartisan institute dedicated to advancing innovative public policies that strengthen neighborhoods, support families and reduce urban poverty.

Equity For Children

Equity for Children provides a platform for academics, students, policymakers, and practitioners working to better the lives of children in need. With headquarters in New York at The New School and branches in Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, and Mexico City, Equity for Children sponsors original research, teaching, events, and symposia in person and through its websites in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Partners include UNICEF and Young Lives at the University of Oxford.

The Community Development Finance Project (CDFP)

CDFP connects private, public, and philanthropic capital markets with academic education in the fields of community development, social entrepreneurship, sustainability management, and urban design. Its mission is to teach an array of financial management skills to graduate students of management and urban policy. Its primary vehicle is its signature course, the Community Development Finance Lab, which engages students over two semesters in real client-based projects and building networks with working professionals in the field. CDFP is also committed to the replication of its community development and nonprofit finance curriculum and practice-based learning approach at other universities; to the sharing of knowledge, particularly applied research; and to an active program of civic engagement.

Observatory on Latin America (OLA)

The broad theme for the OLA is “Social Democracy in a Globalized World: Anticipating Futures in Latin America.” The OLA also continues with the prior work and impact created by the successful University program: the Argentina Observatory.

The Social Innovation Initiative

The New School's Social Innovation Initiative is a cross divisional partnership between The New School for Public Engagement, Parsons, and Lang, designed to provide students with skills to become versatile change-makers able to lead across diverse career pathways and within diverse sectors. The New School community of faculty and students are developing a foundation of knowledge about social innovation, a body of applied research and creative and professional practice, and methods of experiential teaching and learning. The initiative was catalyzed by the invitation from Ashoka U for The New School to join its Changemaker Campus Initiative in 2009.

Accreditation

The Urban Policy Analysis and Management Program is accredited by the National Association of Public Affairs and Administration.
