Miss High School America is a beauty pageant held annually for teenage girls in 9th, 10th, and 11th grade. The girls that compete for the national title represent the 50 states along with the District of Columbia and Canada.[1] The current Miss High School America is Emily Bray from Missouri. On July 5, 2015 Emily was crowned Miss High School America at the Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Florida. ("Vindy.com - Miss High School America").[2]
History
Miss High School America was established in 2009 by Amanda Patterson of Arkansas. The goal of the pageant is to encourage positive moral values and to provide positive opportunities for the girls that chose to compete [3] The Miss High School America pageant selects state representatives through state level competitions that mirror the national competition. For states that do not hold state competitions, the national staff selects a representative that exemplifies high moral character and necessary qualifications to represent their state at the national competition.[4] The pageant system hosts a national competition for young girls in middle school and women in college. These divisions have their own age requirements, but follow the same rules and regulations as the Miss High School America Pageant. The title for middle school girls is Miss Jr. High America, and the title for the college woman is properly called Miss Collegiate America. Americas Pageant Organization has adopted B.R.A.V.E (Building Respect and Values for Everyone) as their national platform.[5] The state representatives and national winners are asked to advocate for this program through various community service projects. Community service is heavily awarded at the national pageant by awarding the state representative with the most community service hours a $5,000 scholarship on behalf of Amber Smith.[6]

Miss High School America receives a $10,000 scholarship along with gifts from sponsors and supporters of the pageant system. These gifts include:

- The winner of the national pageant also receives a full-tuition travel scholarship on behalf of the People to People Student Ambassador Programs. Miss High School America will get the opportunity to travel and tour London, India, Peru, or the Mediterranean Sea as part of the People to People Student Ambassador Program. This scholarship has been awarded to the past two girls crowned. The first title holder to experience this trip was Annie Jorgensen, Miss High School America 2014. Her experience with this organization changed her life and prepared her to be an independent woman while learning information about our global neighbors.[7]
Competition
The pageant competition consists of a 5-minute panel style interview, a preliminary competition in which the contestants compete on stage in fun fashion and evening gown, and a final on-stage competition of the top semifinalists selected from the preliminary competition and interview scores. The semifinalists then compete again in the same areas of competition. The final competition scores are then used to select the top 5 contestants that will answer an on stage question. After the final question, the winner and runners-up are announced.[8]
Location
The national competition was held in Branson, Missouri for its first year. The pageant then took place in San Antonio, Texas for the next two years. Since 2013, the national Miss High School America Pageant has been held at the Swan and Dolphin Resort in Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida.[9] In 2016, the pageant will return to San Antonio, Texas.
