Introduction

Mito Castle was a 12th-century castle with an extensive history, now ruins, located in Hitachi province.[1][2]

History

The castle was originally constructed in 1214 by Baba Sukemoto. This clan continued the rule of the castle, until eventually it was taken by Edo, some time in the early 1400s. It had originally been names Baba castle, however after being taken by Edo, and expanding and developing the castle, they gave it its present name. Th Castle eventually passed to the control of the Tokugawa clan. A large fire destroyed many of the buildings in 1764, and the castle was decommissioned, with many castles in Japan, in the Meiji period.[3][4]

Current Site

Little of the Castle now remain, except one gate and the clan's school building.
