The Morris Operation in Grundy County, Illinois, United States, is the location of the only de facto high-level radioactive waste storage site in the United States* and holds 772 tons of spent nuclear fuel.[1] It is owned by GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy with an address of 7555 East Collins Rd., Morris, IL 60450.[2] The site is located immediately southwest of Dresden Generating Station. Spent nuclear fuel assemblies are stored at this away-from-reactor, Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI) in a spent fuel storage pool.[3][4][5]

*This reference may be misleading. Every nuclear plant in the US has spent fuel pools to store their used fuel. The Harris Plant in NC was originally intended to be a 4 unit site but only one unit was built. However, the spent fuel facility on site was built for all four units and has since been used to store used fuel from both the Robinson site in SC and the Brunswick site in NC. Additionally, the government's decision to cancel the Yucca Mountain Spent Fuel Repository has left the US nuclear sites with more spent fuel than could fit in their spent fuel pools. This has necessitated the installation of Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installations on most sites, where the older spent fuel is stored in dry storage facilities. Thus the statement that the Morris Operation Facility is the only de facto high-level radioactive waste storage site is not correct.
