Mr. Belloc Objects to "The Outline of History" is a 1926 short book written by the British novelist H. G. Wells as a rebuttal of the criticism of historian Hilaire Belloc. In 1926, Belloc published his A Companion to Mr. Wells's "Outline of History" as a critique of Wells’ earlier historical textbook, The Outline of History. A devout Roman Catholic, Belloc was deeply offended by Wells’ treatment of Christianity in The Outline.

The Conflict

Wells published his Outline in 1920 as a universal history – one that deals with more than "reigns and pedigrees and campaigns".[1] Wells had embarked upon his Outline as a result of his work with the League of Nations[2] and a desire to aid world peace by providing the world "common historical ideas".[3] The Outline proved to be an expansive, all-encompassing work. Wells had a panel of specialists at his disposal to review and check his work. Although the panel revealed many inevitable "gaps, misjudgments and misproportions",[4] Wells reserved the right to "maintain his own judgments".[5] As a result, The Outline contained what were alleged by Belloc to be a number of biased statements, intolerant statements and false assumptions. Materialistic determinism was viewed as a central philosophy underlying the Outline, with Wells portraying human progress to be both a blind and inevitable rise from the darkness of religious superstition to the light of scientific utopia. Unfortunately, Wells’ judgments and perceived bias left his work open to heavy criticism.

Hilaire Belloc was the most lively and argumentative of Wells’ critics to take aim at The Outline. A devout Roman Catholic and staunch defender of the faith, Belloc attacked Wells' portrayal of religion in general and the Catholic Church in particular. He accused Wells of prejudiced provincialism and attacked his tacitly anti-Christian stance, stating that he had devoted more space in his "history" to the Persian campaign against the Greeks than he had to the figure of Christ. Belloc’s anger led him to take personal shots at Wells, accusing the writer of having "the very grievous fault of being ignorant that he is ignorant". He accused Wells of having the "strange cocksuredness of the man who knows only the old conventional textbook of his schooldays and mistakes it for universal knowledge."[6]

Belloc wrote a series of twenty-four articles attacking The Outline, publishing them in Catholic magazines such as Universe, Southern Cross and Catholic Bulletin. In 1926, he assembled the voluminous articles into a single volume entitled A Companion to Mr. Wells’s "Outline of History".

Belloc opened the attack by praising the clarity of Wells's style; his sense of historical time; his imaginative power, which allied him to Michelet; his verbal accuracy which Belloc contrasted with his own carelessness; and his patent, if provincial, sincerity. The charge of provincialism was the kernel of Belloc's accusation. He defined it as 'satisfied ignorance: a simple faith in the non-existence of what one has not experienced'; for Wells really did believe that 'his doctrines of good-will, vague thinking, loose loving, and the rest' might ensure the salvation of mankind. Belloc defended his opponent against the charge of brevity – it was the shape, not the size of the Outline that was wrong; and of superficiality, which was not the same thing as limitation. The essence of superficiality was indifference. 'Mr. Wells means to say all that is in him, and if there is not very much in him, that is not his fault.' Even Wells's provincialism was an aspect of his patriotism; and patriotism, even when carried to lengths which were intellectually absurd, had something to be said for it. Thucydides had been none the worse historian for being patriotic.[7]

Wells responded to Belloc’s articles with a series of six of his own, and found little interest in the academic dispute outside the Catholic publications. As an incentive, he offered the Catholic magazines the use of the articles for no payment; they declined. Wells responded to the refusal in a letter to the Universe:

I am sorry to receive your letter of 19 May. May I point out to you that Mr. Belloc has been attacking my reputation as a thinker, writer, an impartial historian and an educated person for four and twenty fortnights in the Universe? He has misquoted; he has misstated. Will your Catholic public tolerate no reply?[8]

A month later, the editor of the Universe offered Wells the opportunity of correcting definite points of fact upon which he might have been misrepresented.[9] The editor added the stipulation that Wells would not be allowed to defend his views or examine Belloc's logic. Wells then turned to secular publications, and found no interest. He then edited his articles and assembled them into a single volume, his Mr. Belloc Objects to “The Outline of History”.

Like Belloc, Wells resorted to personal attacks, accusing Belloc of being "the sort of man who talks loud and fast for fear of hearing the other side", and declaring that "his apparent arrogance is largely the protection of a fundamentally fearful man."[10]

The Aftermath

Wells’ scientific credibility suffered a posthumous blow as a result of Mr. Belloc Objects. Wells cited the Piltdown Man as evidence supporting Darwin's Theory of Evolution. Discovered in 1912, and purported to be a missing link in human evolution, the Piltdown Man was exposed as a hoax in 1953.

Significance

The academic conflict holds little direct significance today, except to demonstrate the untiring tenacity of the combatants. Both danced around one another while achieving little. Answering Belloc demanded a great deal more time and attention to detail. Wells spent much of his time countering Belloc, thus forcing him to sacrifice time and effort previously dedicated to writing novels. Many of Wells’ novels around this time prove to be argumentative pieces disguised as works of fiction; many more were didactic and expository in nature. This proved to damage Wells’ literary prominence, as rival writers and academics quickly moved to fill the gap left by his absence.

The conflict between Wells and Belloc is also noteworthy as an example of the fact that one's philosophical presuppositions will inevitably colour one's understanding of the The Outline and most other works. Belloc's spirituality helped him to understand beliefs of the past, enabling him to understand why people acted as they did. Wells dismissed the beliefs of the past as superstitious. His chronological focus limited his analysis of history to the question of when and how, occasionally to the detriment of why.

This conflict exemplifies a critical lesson to be learned by established academics. Belloc and Wells bitterly attacked each other's competence with increasingly personal slights. The personal attacks eroded the credibility of both arguments, and detracted from their respective causes.
