Mymensingh Girls' Cadet College Bengali: ময়মনসিংহ গার্লস ক্যাডেট কলেজ is a military high school for girls, located in Mymensingh town, Bangladesh, near Charpara. It was the first girls' cadet college in Bangladesh. It is a pioneering institution in the field of women's education in Bangladesh. As one of twelve cadet colleges in the country, its aim is to produce future leaders through the medium of a strong academic base but also including extra-curricular activities and basic military training.

History

When Bangladesh and Pakistan were still a single nation, the Pakistan Military Force established cadet colleges in West Pakistan (now Pakistan) and in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). The first cadet college in East Pakistan (present Bangladesh) Faujdarhat Cadet College was established in 1958. After the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, the Bangladesh Armed Forces established six more cadet colleges before 1984. Mymensingh Girls Cadet College was one of those. Mymensingh Girls' Cadet College was founded on 1 July 1982 with the first intake of cadets starting classes on 19 March 1983 under the guidance of the first principal, Mr. Karim Uddin Ahmed. It is situated in the north eastern part of Bangladesh in Mymensingh district, and was the first girls' cadet college in Bangladesh. Since 2006 two more Girls' Cadet Colleges have been established. The campus' total area is approximately 21 acres (85,000 m²).

Academic System

Mymensingh Girls’ Cadet College is one of the top educational institutions in the country academically. Like all other cadet colleges, it follows the English version of the National Curriculum as prescribed by the National Curriculum and Textbook Board. The cadet college education begins in the 7th grade and ends with the 12th grade. The number of cadets in each grade is no more than 50. Cadets undertake the Junior School Certificate (JSC), Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations. Most of the cadets take the science pathway, however, a few also take additional humanities subjects in addition. Moreover, cadets are graded on fortnightly and end of term internal examinations.

Each academic year is divided into three terms- First term, Second term and Third term. Cadets in certain grades will sit extra pre-tests (mocks/prelims), tests and school final examinations.

It follows the standard grading system prescribed by the central Cadet College authority which in turn follows the national standard. However, for the internal examinations the "D" grade of national standard is combined downwards to "F".

Extra-curricular Activities

Cultural Activities

The cadet college education includes various cultural activities for the cadets to explore their wider potential. Throughout the year different inter-house performance competitions are held: Qirat, Poetry Recitation (Bengali and English), Extempore Speech (Bengali and English), Debate (Bengali and English), Elocution (Bengali and English), General Knowledge, Current affairs, Music, Dance and Painting competitions. Further, the inter-house Wall Magazine (Bengali and English) competitions are also held. The three houses organize their own house cultural nights each term. On the basis of the result of different competitions, the champion and runner-up house are awarded trophies.

Games and sports

Cadets participate in different kinds of sports during the mandatory one hour games period afternoon. Cadets also participate in inter-house games and sports competitions throughout the year. Outdoor games include- Basketball, volleyball, handball, cricket, football, swimming, tennis and badminton. Indoor games include- chess, table tennis and carom. In the last term of the year, a four day long inter-house athletic competition. The track events includes- 100, 200, 400, and 1600 meters races. The field events include- javelin throw, shotput, high jump and long jump. Trophies are also awarded to the best two houses at the end of the year for their performances in games and sports.

Cadets must also participate in the mandatory school week morning physical training exercises (PT) when they jog, walk and run and do free hand exercises.

Club activities

Cadets participate in different clubs and societies according to their interests. Example of different clubs are: physics, chemistry, biology, art, general knowledge, photography, Bengali and English recitation, Bengali and English dramatic dialogue, music, dancing, debating and computers.

House championship

At the end of year, the winner and runner-up houses are awarded with trophies. The championship is determined by the overall performance of the cadets of a particular house in academics, discipline, drill and PT, cultural and sports activities combined.

Academic achievements

More than 98% of the cadets get A+ in JSC, SSC and HSC. In 2001 only 76 examinees in SSC secured GPA 5 in the whole country, and out of them 23 were from Mymensingh Girls' Cadet College. This college is at the top of regional rankings for certificate examinations in the Dhaka area: 5th position in 2013, 3rd in 2012, 2nd in 2011 and 1st position in 2010 in the HSC. It also achieved 6th position in 2013, 9th in 2012, 8th in 2011, and 5th place in 2010 in the SSC examination Dhaka Education Board. In the Junior School Certificate examination, within the region, the school secured 2nd position in 2012, 6th in 2011, and 9th place in 2010.

Extra-curricular achievements

Like all other cadet colleges of Bangladesh, MGCC also emphaises on different extra-curricular activities with a view to provide all-round education for the cadets. It won the National Television English Parliamentary Debate Competition in 2007. In the Inter-Cadet College Literary and Music Meet has won six times since 2001. At the Inter-Girls’ Cadet College Sports Meet, it has won in Basketball twice (in 2013 and 2011) and once in Volleyball competition (in 2011).

• ICCLMM: Overall champion- 2001, 2002, 2004 (jointly with Rangpur Cadet College), 2007, 2009, 2011. Besides, MGCC became the overall champion in IGCCSM in 2011.

Ex-Cadets

The graduated cadets are known as ex-cadets. All the ex-cadets maintain deep love and respect for their alma mater. After passing out from the college, all the ex-cadets remain in touch with their classmates through the alumni organization. The official alumni organisation of Mymensingh Girls Cadet College is known as Association of Mymensingh Ex-Cadets AMEC. All the ex-cadets try to remember the teachings and values learnt from their alma mater, and continue to carry them out within their personal and social lives. With the help of AMEC the ex-cadets also engage themselves in different social welfare activities.
