National Railway Museum of New Zealand

The National Railway Museum of New Zealand (NRM) is being built[1] to show the history of the New Zealand railways. Work is underway to open at Ferrymead Heritage Park in Ferrymead, Christchurch by the end of 2015 at the site of New Zealand's first railway opened in 1863.[2]

The museum owns one electric locomotive from Wellington, one electric multiple unit also from Wellington and three wagons with a leased diesel shunter. The museum will also other NZR and Bush locomotives from the Canterbury Railway Society. The museum will also display other rolling stock including a turntable from Auckland and any other suitable railway material. The museum is still being built with the turntable in place.[1]

TR 190 TR 943 NZR Hillside Workshops 457 1978 2008 Entered NZR service in January 1978. Withdrawn in 2003 and was purchased by Dunedin Railways. It was then purchased by the Rail Heritage Trust of New Zealand in 2008 and is on long-term loan to the NRMNZ. It is currently at Mainline Steams Middleton depot being restored to static display.[6]

EA 2 EO 45 Toshiba Heavy Industries n/a 1968 July 15, 2013 Entered NZR service in April 1968. It was reclassified EO 45 in 1978. On 21 May 1980 EO 45 along with EOs 51 and 74 derailed at Goat Creek due to a washout. The 'EO' was later taken to Addington Railway Workshops for repairs. Withdrawn on 16 July 1997 due to the end of the Otira Tunnel electrification. It was stored at Linwood Locomotive Depot until being moved to the Ferrymead Heritage Park a year later. While there it saw occasional uses with EOs 68 and 74. Moved to Picton in 2004. In 2007 EO 45 was transferred to Hutt Workshops for an overhaul for uses for push/pull Wellington commuter services. Re-entered service on 8 December a year later. Its last run was on 10 November 2011. EO 45 was later withdrawn again on the 28 in the same month. It was donated to the NRMNZ in March 2013 and arrived on 15 July in the same year. It is currently stored on the museums rail connection until the museum is complete.

Electric multiple units

D 162 D 2687 English Electric 1648 1953 May 14, 2014 Entered NZR service in July 1953. During service this tralier car was paired up with power car DM 216. Withdrawn in July 2001 and stored at Hutt Workshops. Restored and re-painted into the "Midland Red" livery. Returned to Wellington commuter services due to EMU/locomotive shortages in October 2008. The set was named the Phoenix. Withdrawn again in December 2011. Donated to the NRMNZ in January 2013. Arrived on 14 May 2014. It is currently stored on the museums rail connection until the museum is complete.
DM 16 DM 216 English Electric 1561 1949 May 14, 2014 Entered NZR service in December 1949. During service this tralier car was paired up with power car D 2687. Withdrawn in July 2001 and stored at Hutt Workshops. Restored and re-painted into the NZR Midland Red livery. Returned to Wellington commuter services due to EMU/locomotive shortages in October 2008. T 199 T 813 NZR Addington Workshops 1966 February 17, 2014 Entered NZR service on 31 March 1966. Renumbered as T 813 in 1978. Donated to the NRMNZ by the defunct Friends of Waverley Station Trust. Arrived at the Ferrymead Heritage Park on 17 February 2014. Stored on a track set next to the turntable.
