The Naval Review was established in October 1912 by a group of eight Royal Navy officers who had formed a naval society "to promote the advancement and spreading within the service of knowledge relevant to the higher aspects of the naval profession".

The Naval Review is issued quarterly for private circulation in the last week of January, April, July, and October. Subscription is limited by regulation.

Since 2010, the Naval Review has been a co-sponsor of the annual Alan Villiers Memorial Lecture at Oxford.
