Location:

Nira is a town Maharashtra 80 km from Pune. It is named after the Nira River. There are two famous education societies in Nira. First is ZP school 1&2. Second is Mahatma Gandhi Vidyalaya and Kilachand Kanishtha Mahavidyalay, Nira.

Geography

Nira is situated on the banks of River Nira, at the border of Pune district and Satara district and at the border of Purandar, Baramati, Phaltan, Khandala tehasil. 1. at the border of Pune district and Satara district:- When, one travels from Nira towards Pandharpur, immediately next to Nira, on the Pune-Pandharpur Road, hardly 1 km, you see the end of Pune District, and Satara district starts. So it is the border of these 2 districts.

2. at the border of Purandar, Baramati, Phaltan, Khandala tehasil

Immediately when one travels from Nira to Baramati, hardly 3-4 km away, the tehsil Purandar of Pune District, (in which Nira is), once you cross Nimboot village, tehsil Baramati (also in Pune District) starts. Similarly, on Nira-Pandharpur Road, you get to Padegaon, it is in Phaltan Tehsil (Satara District), and hardly 5 km is Lonand, which is in Khandala tehsil (Satara District).

Economy

Nira is surrounded by agricultural land, and there is abundant water in and around the town. It lies between two canals, called Nira Right and Nira Left, and the Nira River. Agriculture is therefore its main activity. Nira is famous for jaggery and onion and was once a leading producer of them. Fig, custard apple, pomegranate, guava, sweet lime, and grapes are available there. Sugar cane, wheat, bajara, maize, and jawar are major farm crops.

In the town there is an ice factory named Angha Ice Factory. Nearby there are a sugar factory at Someshwar, a chemical factory and a unit that manufactures concrete pipes.Transport facility is also available by famous Aarti Transport all over India.

Nira have the biggest grampanchayat which have the hitech building which is named as "Shivajirao Chavan", which have integrated shops. There is another shopping complex in front of the Nira State Transport Stop (ST Bus Station) which is named "Vasantrao Chavan", it have all the shops from Hotels, Sweet Mart, Clothing, Barber, Garage, Medicals etc. that is the one stop shop for all kind of needs.

Nira have Zilla Parishad school which have good infrastructure and named as "Ramrao Chavan".

Transport

Nira is linked by railway to Miraj and Kolhapur. Long-route trains do not stop there. Roads around Nira are village roads of good quality.

By road, it is well connected to Pune via Jejuri, the famous temple town, and saswad. On the other side, it is also connected to a famous pilgrimage place, Pandharpur via Phaltan. Third major town it connects is Baramati, the emerging industrial town.

To all these places, regular road transport (S. T.) buses are available. Takes around 2–2.5 hours from Pune, 1.5 hours from baramati. Some 2.5 hours from Pandharpur.

Temples

A very famous Temple of Datta on the bank of river Nira once visited by then Shree Sreedhar Swamy. Nira has many more temples, including one of Ramdas Swamy built up by Dr. Vivek Vaidya near to Home of Vaidya & Parchure Family. Saibaba temple is the second biggest temple , located in ward no 4 (shinde vasti). Jyotirling Temple at Gulunche is very famous for 'Katebaras Yatra" 5 km from to Nira. Also there is a Panchayatan temple (temple of five lords) which is spacious and surrounded by beautiful garden. It is owned by the chemical factory Jubilant Life Sciences and is located on Nira - Baramati road. Temple of lord Shiva established by Dattajirao(Aaba) Chavan couple of decades back is also very holy place to visit, which is located in Nira-Shivtakrar around 2 KM from railway station
