Old Red Cracker
Old Red Cracker (abbreviate +ORC) is a pseudonym/handle for a reverser that wrote the now famous +ORC "how to crack" lessons. He was one of the pioneers of publishing cracking lessons on the Internet and therefore very well known among the reverser scene. Not much is known about +ORC since he has never revealed his identity but he has left clues and puzzles on how to reach him.[1] This has led to so called "+ORC Stalking" where individuals have tried to find out who he really is. Some have speculated that he might be from Europe but this has never been confirmed. Among people who have tried to find +ORC's true identity is +Fravia who has even had email correspondence with him and spread his tutorials.[2]
Old Red Cracker (+ORC) founded High Cracking University (+HCU), to conduct research into Reverse Code Engineering (RCE). The addition of the "+" sign in front of the nickname of a reverser signified membership in the +HCU. +ORC is considered a genius of reverse engineering and a legendary figure in RCE. He had also taught and authored many papers on the subject, and his texts are considered classics in the field and are mandatory reading for students of RCE. +Fravia was a professor at +HCU.[3]
Amongst the students of +HCU were the top of the elite Windows reversers worldwide. +HCU published a new reverse engineering problem annually and a small number of respondents with the best replies qualified for an undergraduate position at the university.[3]
Nowadays most of the graduates of +HCU have migrated to Linux and few have remained as Windows reversers. The information at the university has been rediscovered by a new generation of researchers and practitioners of RCE who have started new research projects in the field.[3]
