OpenClassrooms is an online learning platform for vocational training, providing courses in IT, technology, entrepreneurship, and digital skills[1] at large, in English, French, and Spanish.

History

The origins of OpenClassrooms go back to 1999, when Mathieu Nebra,[2] helped by Pierre Dubuc, launched a community site for tutorials called Le site du Zéro. Its aim was to help young people to learn programming languages.

In 2007, the site became a company, which offers online courses, MOOCs, and learning paths on freemium basis. These courses are created either in house, or in partnership with universities, such as École polytechnique,[3] and companies, such as IBM.[4]

In 2015, the number of OpenClassrooms user accounts has reached one million,[5] whereas the number of unique visitors has reached 3.5 millions per month.

Learning paths

In 2015, OpenClassrooms launches an entirely MOOC-based BA degree in multimedia project management, recognised by French state.[6] In 2016, it begins offering certified online learning paths[7] in fields such as web development.

Online mentoring

OpenClassrooms has been using the so-called mastery learning approach: the learners are encouraged to master the preceding level of skills and knowledge before moving to the next level. In 2015, the company begins experimenting with online mentoring and integrates it into its educational offer.[8]

Awards

In 2015, Mathieu Nebra was named among MIT Innovators Under 35[9] by MIT Technology Review. In 2016, Pierre Dubuc became one of the Forbes 30 Under 30,[10] in the category "social entrepreneurship".
