PSafe is a Brazilian digital security company that provides cloud-based software and free internet protection for Windows and Android users in Brazil and Latin America. The main product is the PSafe Total, available for both platforms, that provides software optimization features and operating system protection.

It is plenty of features, fast, 100% free and ready to ensure a safe internet browsing. Because all your products are cloud-based, the PSafe does not compromise the performance of computers and devices. Updates are processed automatically and the user does not need to download new versions.

The company is pioneer in Brazil and Latin America to offer free cloud-based antivirus. The PSafe Antivirus reaches over 30 million downloads only in Brazil at the end of 2013 and has 20 million active users monthly.

The company’s plan for expansion indicates an increasing in the Brazilian customer number and in the popularity of its products and services around the Latin America. The goal is to reach 100 million active users until December 2015 by exposing the risks involved in daily activities while we are browsing on the internet. Daily, PSafe detects 70,000 new threats in the virtual world. PSafe was launched in November 2010 with an initial investment round of $15 million[2][4][5] from Redpoint Ventures, Index Venture and BV Capital. Until now, PSafe does not have any competitors in Brazil and is the only company to offer all its portfolio of services and products in Portuguese and Spanish free.

In 2013, there was a new investment round from other three funds: Pinnacle Ventures and Redpoint Ventures, with the injection of US$5 million, and Qihoo 360 Technology, investing US$25 million. With the strategy of conquering a slice of the BRICS emerging market, the PSafe announced the expansion of its range of products and services, approaching the Chinese company's business model. The releases were a portal content, providing for the adoption of new features, such as an app and games stores, and new products such as SafeWifi, a connection network with safe mobile internet.

Nowadays, according to Techcrunch,[2] the PSafe reaches a R$1B valuation (about $320M), after receiving the $30M Series D financing, led by existing investors Qihoo 360, Pinnacle and Redpoint eVentures Brazil. In this new strategy, the PSafe Total Android will start an expanding in Latin America to Mexico, Argentina, Chile, and others, and, soon, will cross the Atlantic to offer security and privacy for users of Portugal and Spain.

Corporate history

2010

PSafe was launched in November 2010 as part of an effort by Xango Group – holding company from Rio de Janeiro that develops startups in Brazil7, after PSafe’s $15 million Series A investment round came from venture capital firms like Redpoint Ventures, Index Ventures, and BV Capital.[6] The company, in a few weeks, opens office in Rio de Janeiro, hires 30 employees and develops its first product: a free antivirus.

2011

During the first months of operation, the company reaches 100,000 users and promotes its first Marketing action in order to engage internet users to clean up the internet in Brazil. The title was “Heróis da rede” and involved partnering with Peixe Urbano, Mentez and Vostu to allow customers to earn credit if they referred friends to the service.

2012

The company expands its operations and is divided into four areas: antivirus, cloud storage, antiphishing and internet booster.

2013

In August 2013 PSafe entered a partnership with Bitdefender,[7] an antivirus solutions company. As part of the partnership, PSafe will incorporate Bitdefender’s software into its products. The partnership was intended to bolster PSafe’s ability to provide the most effective antivirus products in Brazil [3][12]

Following PSafe’s Series C funding round, the company was valued at approximately $130 million.[4]

2014

In 2014 PSafe aims to reach 30 million desktops active users and 21 million Android active users. Following PSafe’s Series C funding round, the company was valued at approximately $130 million.[8]

2015

In 2015 PSafe announced a new product, the SafeWifi, and confirmed its expanding successfully after raises $30 million in Series C funding.[9][10] Qihoo 360 led the round with a $25 million investment, and further funding came from Redpoint e.Ventures, and Pinnacle Ventures.

The Brazilian #1 app in the Play Store, PSafe Total Android, will be available in the Mexican, Argentine, Chilean, and other Latin American markets, and then to Portugal and Spain. The company reaches a R$1B valuation (about $320M), first for a Latin American mobile company.

Services

PSafe’s antivirus software is accessed through the cloud, meaning that users always have the latest virus definitions when scanning the computer. Virus registries, which are hosted on PSafe servers, are constantly updated, allowing for high detection rates.

In November 2011, PSafe reported that its software had removed 45 million infections and that approximately 87% of surveyed users had computers that were infected with a “virtual plague” that would allow their machines to be used remotely by hackers.

In September 2014, PSafe reported malicious plugin targeting Bank of Brazil customers and provided solutions to help remove the virus.[11]
