The Pan Pacific Trade Union Secretariat (PPTUS) was established as the Asia and Pacific branch of the Profintern (Red International of Trade Unions, or RILU) at a conference in Hankou, China in May 1927.[1] The conference set the headquarters of the PPTU in Shanghai. Trade union participants to the founding congress came from the Soviet Union, France, China, Australia, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Great Britain and Indonesia.[2]
Its first head was American CPUSA member (and later chairman) Earl Browder; an original member was his brother-in-law Harrison George.
The journal of the Secretariat was the "Pan-Pacific Worker".[3]
