Pax Romana - the international federation of Catholic intellectuals (university students and graduates), one of the oldest international lay Catholic movements.

Name

The organization's name: Pax Romana, refers to the peace existing in the days of Christ. The movement received "Pax Romana" in 1921 from Pope Benedict XV.

History

Pax Romana was created in two stages:

  • in 1921[1] IMCS/MIEC (the student movement)
  • in 1947 ICMICA/MIIC (academic movement) as a response of Catholic university lecturers and students to the need to build a peaceful world after experience of two world wars.

Structure

IMCS/MIEC

The International Team of IMCS / MIEC Pax Romana consists of an President, Secretary General, Ecclesial Assistant. Organization is composed of regional structures, of which some are joined with IYCS/JECI:

ICMICA/MIIC

The International Team of ICMICA / MIIC Pax Romana consists of an President, Secretary General, Ecclesial Assistant. The International Council is composed of Five Regional Vice-Presidents (who are also coordinators for certain continent), and Vice President for Finance and two countries from each region. Elections to the International Team shall be held during the Plenary Assembly, which takes place every 4 years. In between the International Team convokes annual International Council Meeting. In 2004, it took place in Warsaw, Poland (for the first time in the history of Pax Romana in Poland), while in 2008 in Nairobi, Kenya (for the first time on the African continent).

Mandate 2004-2008:

  • President: Patricio Rodé from Uruguay was elected for International President in 2004. After his death in November 2005, Jean Nsonjiba Lokenga from DR Congo was elected for this function.
  • Ecclesial Assistant: father Antoine Sondag, France, by then working in Secours Catholique - Caritas France.
  • Secretary General: Paul Ortega, former director of the UNESCO Center in Basque Country.
  • Vice Presidents:
    • Europe: Piotr Cywinski (Poland)
    • Africa: Jean Lokenga (DR Congo),
    • Asia / Pacific: Anselmo Lee (South Korea),
    • Latin America: Irma Marino Vargas (Peru),
    • North America: Mark Wolff (USA).

Mandate 2008-2012:

  • President: Prof. Dr. Javier Iguiniz of Peru.
  • Ecclesial Assistant: Fr Luis Maria Goikoetxea, Chaplain of Europe region for the mandate 2004-2008.
  • Secretary-General: Philippe Ledouble of France.

Mandate 2012-2016:

  • Vice Presidents:
    • Europe: Ramon Ibeas (Spain/Basque Country),
    • Africa: Fredrick Wamalwa (Kenya)
    • Asia / Pacific: Adrian Pereira (Malaysia)
    • Latin America: Ana Claudia de los Heros (Uruguay)
    • North America: Kevin Ahern (USA)

European Board

Each regional (for each continent) Board is elected for a 4-year term and consists of 7 members of the board and vice president of the given continent, who coordinates the work of the board. Elections are held during the Regional (continental) Assembly, which takes place after every International Congress. In 2004, Congress was held in Poland, in 2008, Kenya. Each regional board is assisted by regional Ecclesial Assistant.

European Board 2004-2008

President of the European Board (vice-president of the International Board): Piotr Cywinski. Ecclesial Assistant: father Luis Maria Goikotxea (in the next term of office nominated the International Ecclesial Assistant of Pax Romana). Among members of the Board were:

Membership

Currently, brings together Federations and Movements of Catholic Intellectuals and Professional from over 54 countries.

Specialized Secretariats

ICMICA / MIIC Pax Romana also works by 6 specialized secretariats:

  • SIQS - The International Secretariat of Scientific questions;
  • MIJC - The International Secretariat of the Catholic Lawyers;
  • SIIAEC - The International Secretariat of the Catholic Engineers, Agronoms and Industrialists;
  • SIESC - The International Secretariat of Catholic High School Teachers;
  • SIAC - The International Secretariat of Christian Artists;
  • Women's vision (the group during the world congress in 2008 acquired the status of the International Secretariat).

Representation

Pax Romana (jointly between International Movement of Catholic Students and International Catholic Movement for Intellectual and Cultural Affairs) has a special consultative status with ECOSOC (Economic, Social and Cultural Council) of the United Nations. It has representative in New York, Paris, Geneva, Vienna and Nairobi. Pax Romana is a recognized as a private organisation before the Canon Law of the Catholic Church. It is also a member of CONGO (Conference of NGOs in consultative relationship with the United Nations)
