Pedro Mário Soares Martínez (21 November 1925 – 12 April 2021) was a Portuguese politician, academic, and lawyer.[1]

Biography

With a degree in the Legal Sciences (1947) and Political-Economic Sciences (1949), he became a lawyer, admitted in 1950 to the Portuguese Bar Association. That same year he began an academic career as an assistant at the Faculty of Law at the University of Lisbon. In 1953, he obtained a doctorate in Political-Economic Sciences at the same University (1953), having risen to extraordinary professor (1956) and full professor (1958). He was the author of a Manual on Corporate Law (1971) and a Manual on Political Economy (1973), a subject in which he was recognized as an expert, and collaborated in numerous scientific publications, both national and foreign. He was a visiting professor at the Catholic University of Portugal and at the Department of Law at the Universidade Portucalense, in Porto.

In addition to being a lawyer and professor, he was also a member of the Diplomatic Staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1948-1956); consultant and business administrator, operators in the banking sector and insurance.

At the Lisbon Faculty of Law, he served as secretary (1958–1967) and director (1971–1974).

Supporter of the Estado Novo, Soares Martinez was attorney for the Corporate Chamber (1960–1968) and served as Minister of Health from 1962 to 1963 under the government of António de Oliveira Salazar.

In the period following April 25, 1974, he was a political chronicler for the newspapers O Dia, O Diabo, O Debate, A Rua and Diário Popular.

He was a full member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, corresponding member of the Brazilian Historic and Geographic Institute, the Royal Academy of History, in Madrid, and of the National Academy of History of Venezuela.
