Perspective is P-Model's fourth album.

Overview

During live shows before this album's release, P-Model would play songs that weren't released on albums yet, evolving them, with some appearing on this album. After the album's release, P-Model continued to change the songs' structures, re-recording some of the songs later in their lifespan.

On this album, bandleader Susumu Hirasawa focused on sound, insisting on natural reverb instead of digital reverb and recording the drum parts on the landing of a stairwell on the 8th floor of a multi-tenant building, where the recording studio that the group was using on this album was located. The stairwell was located right in front of the building's elevator, which led to recording being interrupted every time somebody came out of the elevator, with Hirasawa apologizing to whoever came out. This recording method led to constant fighting between Hirasawa and the recording engineer, who insisted on using digital reverb. In the end Hirasawa organized a meeting and all recording was made his way.[1]

Some of the bass parts of this album's songs were replaced by synth parts. This was the first P-Model album to use the Korg Polysix, which was considered by keyboardist Yasumi Tanaka to be a suitable choice. The album has a tense and alienating atmosphere, with Hirasawa shouting his vocals, loud drums (especially the snare drum) and bass, instruments randomly cutting in and out, minimal keyboard parts and twisted guitar parts, sounding like a bad trip.[2] The compositions are simple and lyrics abstract.

Perspective II is an alternate version of Perspective originally released exclusively on Compact Cassette, a first for the group. While it has no drastic changes from Perspective, Perspective II has a different mix, removing the segues from Perspective, using different song takes and having each side of the Cassette Tape bookended with two instrumentals. Some of the new material features the use of a drum machine, which is completely absent from Perspective.
