Pipavav is located at latitude 20°54'N and longitude 71°30'E on the coast of Gujarat, India. By road it is 2 hours (85 km) from Amreli, 30 minutes (20 km) from Rajula city, 2.5 hours (130 km) from Bhavnagar on the east and 1.5 hrs (89 km) from Diu in the west.
Pipavav is the location of Port Pipavav, the first private sector port in India ([1]). Pipavav port is capable of handling container as well as bulk vessels and many shipping lines are currently using the port facilities. The cargo throughput for the port is available on their website. In 2008 Port Pipavav handled around 200,000 TEUs of container cargo.
Pipavav started operations in 1996, primarily to cater to the refrigerated cargo market of Veraval. Over the years it has developed into a port handling various bulk, break bulk and dry container cargo moving in from various nearby and north/west India locations. It has scheduled connectivity to all major Internal Container Depots. Recently, Pipavav Shipyard received the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance for foreign direct investment (FDI), paving the way for it to bid for defence sector deals in India. The clearance will help the company to bid for all future warship projects like frigates, destroyers, aircraft carriers, LPDs, submarine, corvettes etc. of Indian Navy.

It features large drydocks which could accommodate the salvage of oil tankers but had had no business at the time of a visit by members of Greenpeace.

The company (formerly known as Pipavav Shipyard) said on 7 August 2012 that it has received its first, two international orders for Rs 1,192 crore for building two offshore patrol vessels for a west African client.[1]
