Pensacola is the westernmost city in the Florida Panhandle. It is a part of the Pensacola-Ferry Pass-Brent Metropolitan Statistical Area and has a population of about 400,000 (metro) and 200,000(city). It is also the county seat of Escambia.

Pensacola was founded in 1559 by a Spanish explorer named Tristán de Luna y Arellano. It was officially America's first settlement. After about 116 years of Spanish rule the French took control over Pensacola from 1719 to 1722. The colony was then passed to the British who seized control of Pensacola temporarily through the Peace of Paris. Pensacola was also named the capital of the new British Colony. During the Civil War Pensacola was a part of the Confederacy. The United States later regained control through the Adams–Onís Treaty and Pensacola was once again a part of the union on May 1862.

Pensacola tourism well comes from its beaches which includes Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key. Other tourist sites includes Downtown Pensacola, Cordova Mall, and Sam's Fun City. Template:/box-footer

Downtown Pensacola is the economic, political and historical core of Northwest Florida. It is located in southern Escambia County, It is located near the geographical center of Pensacola .It is also centered around centered at Palafox Street and Garden Street, bounded to the south by Pensacola Bay. The other boundaries are more nebulous and open to debate, but A Street to the west, Seventeenth Avenue to the east, and Cervantes Street to the north (the legal boundaries of the Community Redevelopment Agency) are probably the most inclusive borders. The Community Redevelopment Agency and Downtown Improvement Board, both "downtown" taxation districts, have their own, explicitly-defined boundaries. The downtown area grew from the Spanish Panzacola settlement and its later successors, remnants of which can be found in the preserved homes and buildings of Historic Pensacola Village.

Ashton James Hayward III (born April 15, 1969) is the mayor of Pensacola, Florida, USA, having taken office on January 10, 2011.[1] He is the first mayor elected under the new "strong mayor" form of government adopted in 2009.

He was born and raised in Pensacola, graduating from Pensacola Catholic High School in 1987. Hayward earned his bachelor's degree at Florida State University, graduating in December 1993. While in college, he took a break from studies to model in Miami, where he met his future wife, Belgian-born An (they would marry in 1996).[1] For many years, the Haywards made New York City home, returning to Pensacola in 2003 to start a real estate development firm, Pair & Hayward Properties. Hayward ran against the incumbent, Mike Wiggins, and two other candidates, Diane Mack and Charles Bare, for the office of mayor of Pensacola in 2010. After none of the candidates received an outright majority in August elections, Hayward and Wiggins advanced to a runoff election, held November 2, 2010. The Pensacola News Journal endorsed Hayward prior to the election.[4] On November 2, Hayward defeated Wiggins by a vote count of 10,645 to 9,837 – a margin of 808 votes. Wiggins did not contest the tight vote and conceded that evening.
