Puducherry, formerly known as "Pondicherry", is an Union Territory of the Republic of India. It consists of four enclaves - Pondicherry, Karaikal, Yanam and Mahe. Pondicherry and Karaikal are located in south-east India along the Bay of Bengal coast and surrounded on the leeward side by the state of Tamil Nadu. Mahe and Yanam are landlocked and surrounded by Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, respectively.

Puducherry, along with the territory of Chandernagore, made up the erstwhile French India. The first French settlement was established in 1674. These territories were captured by the British East India Company during Anglo-French wars and were returned to the French at the conclusion of hostilities. French India was integrated with the Republic of India in 1954. The cessation was approved by the Parliament of France in 1963. Puducherry was subsequently constituted as a Union Territory of the Republic of India.

Pondicherry city is known for its picturesque beach. It also harboured extremists during the Indian independence movement, notable among whom were Subramanya Bharathi and Aurobindo. Aurobindo Ashram, associated with The Mother is located at Auroville close to Pondicherry. The Shaneeswara temple in Tirunallar, Karaikal is a famous place of pilgrimage for Hindus. The union territory was renamed in 2002. Puducherry is known as The French Riviera of the East (La Côte d'Azur de l'Est). Template:/box-footer

Joseph François Dupleix (January 1, 1697 – November 10, 1763) was governor general of the French establishment in India, and was the rival of Robert Clive.

Dupleix was born in Landrecies, France. His father, François Dupleix, a wealthy farmer, wished to bring him up as a merchant, and, in order to distract him from his taste for science, sent him on a voyage to India in 1715 on one of the French East India Company's vessels. He made several voyages to the Americas and India, and in 1720 was named a member of the superior council at Pondicherry. He displayed great business aptitude, and, in addition to his official duties, made large ventures on his own account, and acquired a fortune. In 1730 he was made superintendent of French affairs in Chandernagore, the town propspered under his energetic administration and grew into great importance.

In 1742, Dupleix was made Governor-General of French India and served in this capacity till 1756. Under his leadership, the French captured the British settlement of Madras in 1746 and ruled it from 1746 to 1749. In the initial stages, he French also held the upper hand in the Carnatic wars against the British. However, the fortunes of the French began to decline gradually from 1751 onwards. Dupleix was recalled in 1756 and he died in France in 1763 at the age of 66. He was a life-long rival of Mahe de La Bordannais.
