The PlayStation family is the world's highest-selling group of video game systems. Sony Computer Entertainment released the PlayStation in 1994, followed by the PlayStation 2 in 2000, PlayStation Portable in 2004, PlayStation 3 in 2006, PlayStation Vita in 2011 and PlayStation 4 in 2013.
Sony's first foray into the video game market, the PlayStation (codenamed PSX during development, now known as PSone), was initially designed as an add-on for Nintendo's Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Super Famicom) video game console as an answer to Sega's Sega CD. When the prospect of releasing the system as an add-on dissolved, Sony transformed it into the standalone PlayStation video game console. Sony's follow-up console, the PlayStation 2 (PS2), currently the world's best-selling console in history, was released in Japan on March 4, 2000 and in North America on October 26, 2000. The PSP or PlayStation Portable is a handheld game console made by Sony Computer Entertainment; a first foray into the handheld gaming market which was previously dominated by Nintendo. Though it has not had as much as of an impact as the PlayStation home consoles, the PSP is noted as being the most successful competitor to Nintendo's handheld range yet. November 2006 saw the launch of the PlayStation 3 (PS3), Sony's seventh generation game console. It uses a unique processing architecture called the Cell microprocessor, a technology jointly developed by Sony, Toshiba, and IBM. The graphics processing unit, the RSX 'Reality Synthesizer', was co-developed by NVIDIA and Sony. Its main competitors were the Xbox 360 and the Wii. The newest console in the PlayStation series is Sony's entry in the eighth generation of consoles, the PlayStation 4 (PS4), which launched in November 2013. Its development was first announced during E3 2003, and it was officially unveiled on May 11, 2004 at a Sony press conference before E3 2004. The system was released in Japan on December 12, 2004, North America on March 24, 2005 and in the PAL region on September 1, 2005. It is the first handheld video game system to use an optical disc format (Universal Media Disc).The unit measures 170 mm (6.7inches) in length, 74 mm (2.9 inches) in width, and 23mm in depth. The MIPS CPU cores are globally clocked between 1 and 333 MHz. During the 2005 GDC, Sony revealed that it had capped the PSP's CPU clock speed at 222 MHz for licensed software. Its reasons for doing so are unknown, but are the subject of some speculation. Various homebrew tools enable users to operate at 333 MHz, generally leading to a higher frame rate at the expense of battery life. On June 22, 2007, Sony Computer Entertainment confirmed that the firmware version 3.50 does in fact remove this restriction and allows future games to run at the full 333 MHz speed. It was first released in Japan, on December 15, 2005, in North America on February 14, 2006, in Australia on March 30, 2006, and in Europe on March 31, 2006. A version for Xbox Live Arcade was released on October 24, 2007, priced at 800 points ($10 USD). A version for the Nintendo DS was released in Japan in January 2008. The basic premise is to lead the main character Mr. ESC, an escapologist, out of hospitals, underground facilities, offices and other buildings within a time limit. Along the way, the player will be hindered by obstacles such as fires or even earthquakes. Sometimes the player must help trapped individuals escape as well, and it will take quick thinking and planning ahead to exit the building successfully.
