The Princeton Club of New York is a private club located in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA. Its membership is composed almost entirely of alumni and faculty of Princeton University, which is located 40 miles outside New York City in Princeton, New Jersey.
It was founded in 1866 as the Princeton Alumni Association of New York. It was re-organized in 1886 as the Princeton Club of New York, and later incorporated as a Club on December 12, 1899.[1] The club had four homes before settling into its current clubhouse at 15 W. 43rd Street in midtown Manhattan in March 1963. During these years the club saw a steady expansion in the diversity of its membership. Cultural and ethnic diversity found steady growth, and as women joined the undergraduate body in increasing numbers, they also found a home at The Princeton Club. In 1973 the officers of the Columbia University Club found it necessary to dissolve their club across the street at 4 W. 43rd Street. The Princeton Club invited many of the Columbia Club members to apply for membership in The Princeton Club and several hundred accepted the invitation. The Club is the largest organized body of Princetonians in the world and is truly the “Heart of Princeton in New York City.”
In addition to overnight accommodation and dining facilities, the club features a 10,000 volume library, a squash and fitness center, business center, and WiFi access.
Membership
Membership in the Princeton Club is restricted to alumni, faculty, and students of Princeton University, as well as alumni of a select number of affiliated schools. Early in the 21st century, the alumni of New York University, whose own club closed in 1989, became eligible for membership.[2] The club's membership has more recently been augmented by the admittance of the former Williams Club members and alumni from select other universities are eligible for membership including University of St Andrews,[3] Case Western Reserve University, Emory University,[4] London School of Economics, Trinity College, Hartford, Fordham University,[5] Penn State University [6] George Washington University,[7] Rice University, Washington University in St. Louis,[8] Lafayette College and McGill University.[9]
Columbia University,[10] New York University,[11] Williams College[12] and The College of William & Mary[13] are separate clubs which share facilities and are "in residence" at The Princeton Club.
