Predecessor Proton Perdana (second generation)

The Proton P4-90B is the codename for an upcoming four-door D-segment saloon from Malaysian automobile manufacturer, Proton. It will succeed the 2013–2015 Proton Perdana, which was produced exclusively for Malaysian civil servants and government officials. Like the 2013–2015 Perdana, the P4-90B will also be based on the eighth generation Honda Accord platform, but will instead feature an all-new Proton-engineered exterior and interior.

History

Pre-launch

The second generation Proton Perdana project includes two phases of development, in which the P4-90B represents the latter half.[2] The development of the earlier first phase, second generation Perdana spanned from late-2012 to late-2013, or from the announcement of the collaboration between Proton and Honda Motor Company, Ltd to the eight-month product development phase and lastly, the début.[3] The first phase, second generation Perdana is simply a rebadged eighth generation Honda Accord, with minimal exterior and interior changes. Production and distribution of the first phase, second generation Perdana commenced in late-2013 at the Honda Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. (HMSB) plant in Alor Gajah, Malacca and is projected to end by late-2015 or early-2016.[4] Around 3,000 units of the first phase, second generation Perdana will be produced to replace the ageing first generation Perdana fleet in use by civil servants and government officials.[5] The second phase, second generation Perdana, codenamed P4-90B will be produced by Proton instead.

The first phase, second generation Proton Perdana was unveiled on 11 December 2013 at a government ceremony in Putrajaya.[3] It is officially badged simply as the 'Proton Perdana', but it has also been dubbed the 'New-look Proton Perdana' by local media.[6] Two versions of the Perdana were unveiled, namely the base 2.0-litre and the more luxurious 2.4-litre model. Additionally, three bespoke long-wheelbase editions have been produced for the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Najib Razak, the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Muhyiddin Yassin and the Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the latter of which is a left-hand drive unit and a celebratory gift in view of the 50th anniversary of Malaysia–Turkey relations.[3][7]

At around mid-2015, at least one prototype of the P4-90B had been completed.[8] Mahathir Mohamad, the chairman of Proton, has made mention that an unnamed aircraft company with the capacity to design cars has also been enlisted in the P4-90B's development.[2] Additionally, it is speculated that Mahathir has in his possession a P4-90B prototype, which he has been evaluating personally.[9]

The Proton P4-90B is set for an early-2016 launch.[8] Unlike the first phase, second generation Perdana, the P4-90B will be marketed to the general public as well, as Proton's most upmarket offering. The company is also aiming for a 5-star ANCAP rating with the new model.[8]
