Rainbow (sometimes stylized as RAINBOW; Korean: 레인보우, Japanese: レインボー) is a South Korean girl group formed in 2009 by DSP Media. The group consists of seven-members: Jaekyung, Woori, Hyunyoung, Jisook, Noeul, Seungah, and Yoonhye. Rainbow released their debut EP Gossip Girl on November 12, 2009 and made their debuted stage on MBC's Show! Music Core on November 14, 2009.

History

2009: Formation and Gossip Girl

Around January 2009, the first rumors emerged regarding the release of a new girl group from DSP Media. The group was rumored to be composed of seven females, with accompanying reports suggesting that some members had been in training with DSP Media for four years.[1][2] During late October and early November 2009, DSP Media released daily teasers in the form of pictures of Rainbow, which culminated in the release of a music video teaser for Gossip Girl on November 6, 2009.[3][4]

On November 3, 2009, Rainbow was launched as an official musical group. DSP issued a statement explaining, "The members of Rainbow were picked so that their physical appearances wouldn't be inferior to Fin.K.L".[5][unreliable source]

On November 11, 2009, the music video for "Gossip Girl" was released, coinciding with the five-song EP of the same name released the following day.[6] On November 14, 2009, the group debuted on Show! Music Core, performing "Gossip Girl", which was also their first single.[7]

Following the release of Gossip Girl, the group promoted "Not Your Girl", a single from the EP which was written in response to SS501's song "U R Man".

2010: Image changes and rise of popularity

In early August 2010, DSP Media released a singlular picture as a teaser for the group's follow-up to Gossip Girl. The members wore plain white dresses, with eyeshadow colors that matched the rainbow color assigned to each of them. In the second teaser picture, released several days later, the members were displayed wearing two sets of outfits against two different backgrounds. On August 11, 2010, the music video for "A" was released and Rainbow; two days later, Rainbow appeared on KBS's television series, Music Bank. Subsequent performances were then broadcast on Show! Music Core and the SBS program Inkigayo.

On October 17, 2010, DSP released a selection of concept photos featuring Rainbow's members; these photos were in anticipation of a new single release for "A". The single was released on October 19, 2010, in addition to the complete set of the concept photos. On October 21, 2010, the first in a series of live performances was broadcast on the Mnet show M! Countdown, and was followed by three more performances. The group then commenced promotion for their next single, "Mach", until November 14, 2010.

Reports then revealed that Rainbow would change its image again, with DSP Media disclosing, "They’ve only shown innocent and sexy sides. They will show an image that will be upgraded. They will transform into the sexy dominatrix image."[8]

2011: So Nyeo, Sweet Dream and Japanese debut

In April 2011, Rainbow released their second EP, SO 女 (where 女 is the east Asian character for "woman"). One song from the EP, "To Me", was released as a single. The season of spring was the overall concept for this release, and the EP's photos featured the group members in white dresses, with a field of flowers in the background.

An image portraying luxury was used for the promotion of "To Me", as the group sought to convey the revenge theme of the song. For the single's composition, Rainbow collaborated with Japan's Daishi Dance and elements of the music clip's ballet choreography were reportedly adapted from Swan Lake. On May 14, 2012, Sega Toys and Dong Woo Animation both hired Rainbow to perform two songs for the Japanese/Korean Animated series Zoobles.[9] The two songs, titled "I Love Zoobles" and "Zooblesui Moheom" are both used as the opening (first opening in the Japanese Dub) and ending themes of the series, performed in three languages: Korean, Japanese and English. The songs were uploaded in DSP Media's official YouTube channel.

On June 20, 2011, a 43-second teaser for Rainbow's next single release, "Sweet Dream", was uploaded onto DSP Media's YouTube channel, with the full music video released a day later. The "Sweet Dream" music video was filmed using a motion control camera. The repackaged version of "SO 女" was released on June 22, 2011, and contained alternate tracks such as "Sweet Dream", an acoustic version of "Kiss" (from Gossip Girl), a club version of "To Me", and an instrumental version of "Sweet Dream". On June 23, 2011, Rainbow performed on M! Countdown in support of the repackaged release.[citation needed]

On September 7, 2011, Rainbow topped Recochoku's weekly download rankings for the Japanese release of their "A" music video. The group held their inaugural performance in Tokyo's Ikebukuro district, drawing a crowd of 2,000 fans, and performed “A”, followed by fifteen minutes of discussion.[10] On September 14, 2011, Rainbow released their debut single in the Japanese market, "A", and reached No. 3 on Oricon's daily single chart, selling 10,141 copies.[11] The single release included a Japanese remake of their debut single "Gossip Girl", as well as an exclusive DVD. Rainbow made their Japanese TV debut on the show Sukkiri, performing "A". On December 7, 2011, the group released their second Japanese single, a Japanese version of the song "Mach" (Japanese: マッハ), and reached No. 9 on Oricon's weekly chart.[citation needed]

2012: Rainbow Pixie, Over the Rainbow and solo projects

On January 3, 2012, DSP Media announced that a section of the group will be formed as a trio. On the same day, a teaser image was revealed on DSP Media's website, revealing "Rainbow Pixie" as the trio's name. On January 4, 2012, another image revealed the members of the group as SeungAh, Jisook and HyunYoung. The group released their debut song, "Hoi Hoi", on January 12, 2012,[12] and held their first performance on Show! Music Core.[13][unreliable source]

Rainbow released a Japanese single on March 14, 2012, entitled "Gonna Gonna Go!" (Japanese: ガナガナGO!).[14] A teaser of the music video was revealed on February 24, 2012,[15] together with details of their debut album, Over the Rainbow, released on March 28, 2012.[16] In April 5, 2012, Rainbow unveiled their second new Japanese song in the Japanese Dub of Zoobles, titled "CANDY GIRLS!". The official Music Video of the song will be shown on September 5, 2012, with the release of the series' first DVD volume.[17][18]

DSP Media announced that the remainder of the group will be undertaking other projects in South Korea until further notice. Woori was participating on the variety show Invincible Youth, but left the show to star in the KBS sitcom I Need A Fairy. Jaekyung participated in jTBC's drama Monster, which premiered on April 2, 2012.[19] On April 19, 2012, DSP Media stated that HyunYoung had been diagnosed with a vocal cord polyp and underwent surgery for its removal, further stating that, "As her schedule became busier, she had to use her voice more, which is why I think she developed the polyp."[20] Jaekyung also appeared in new SBS program Law of the Jungle W. Seungah made part of the season 1 of tvN's show The Romantic and Idol.

2013: Rainbow Syndrome Part 1 & 2

In February 5, it was confirmed that the group will release the first part of its first studio album Rainbow Syndrome on February 13.[21] The group also made a special showcase for the album on the same day. The release date of the second part is currently scheduled for June, and Rainbow will continue with the bright concept from 'Tell Me Tell Me'. Although Rainbow was originally planned to comeback with a different image, they will continue the bright concept to give music lovers a fun song for the summer.[22] On May 27 Rainbow's comeback teaser was released on YouTube. The main title track for part 2 of Rainbow Syndrome is "Sunshine".[23]

2015-present: INNOCENT

In February 11, it was confirmed that the group will release the third mini album INNOCENT on February 23, returning to the music scene for the first time in a year and seven months. Their third mini album, 'INNOCENT' and the music video for its title track, 'Black Swan' were released on February 23. The group had their first comeback performance on M! Countdown on 26 February.

Members

Go Woo-ri (고우리; born February 22, 1988) is a rapper and vocalist in the group.[24] She is the eldest in Rainbow, and was previously a S.M. Entertainment trainee. She studied at Korea National Sport University. Woori was a fixed member cast of the KBS' TV shows Invincible Youth 2 and Let's Go! Dream Team, both in season two, and on the TV sitcom I Need a Fairy, also of KBS.[25] She is a member of Rainbow Blaxx. Her color in Rainbow is orange.[24]

Oh Seung-ah (오승아; born September 13, 1988 ) is a vocalist in the group.[24] She made her audition at DSP Media on the same day as Kara's Goo Hara and Kang Jiyoung. Seungah is studying at Sangmyung University, but is currently on a leave of absence because of the group's activities. She appeared in SS501's music video for "A Song Calling For You". In 2012, she was part of the season 1 of tvN's show The Romantic and Idol, pairing with JJ Project's member JB. She is also a member of the group's sub-unit Rainbow Pixie and Rainbow Blaxx. Her color in Rainbow is indigo.[24]

Kim Jae-kyung (김재경; born December 24, 1988) is the group's leader, and is a vocalist and dancer.[24] She studied at Dongduk Women's University, where she majored in Fashion Design. She has appeared in two music videos by SS501: "Love Like This" and "A Song Calling For You", and in A'ST1's "Dynamite". She made her acting debut on jTBC's drama Monster.[19] She is also a member of the sub-unit Rainbow Blaxx. Her color in Rainbow is red.[24]

No-eul (노을; born May 10, 1989) is a rapper and vocalist in the group.[24] She studied at Sungdong Women's Business High School. Alongside Seungah, Noeul appeared in SS501's music video for "A Song Calling For You". She is a childhood friend of Girls' Generation's Kim Tae-yeon, and she was part of the recurring cameo cast of MBC's TV drama Time Slip Dr. Jin.[26] Her color in Rainbow is blue.[24]

Jung Yoon-hye (정윤혜; born April 14, 1990) is a vocalist and rapper in the group.[24] She is currently studying at Dongduk Women's University, majoring in broadcast entertainment. Both of her parents are classical musicians. Her cousin Roy Kim, is the winner of Mnet's music contest Superstar K4. She has worked independently as a drama actress in The Firstborn[27] and Great First Wives.[28] Her color in Rainbow is violet.[24]

Kim Ji-sook (김지숙; born July 18, 1990) is a main vocalist in the group.[24] She studied at Hanyang Women's University, majoring in music. She is known for resembling Girls' Generation's Kim Tae-yeon.[29] Before Rainbow, Jisook was in a pre-debut rock band. Her mother died of chronic disease on July 4, 2011, during promotions for "Sweet Dream".[30] Jisook is also a member of the group's sub-unit Rainbow Pixie. Her color in Rainbow is green.[24]

Cho Hyun-young (조현영; born August 11, 1991) is a main vocalist in the group.[24] She studied at Shingwang Female High School. Along with Woori, she was previously a S.M. Entertainment trainee. In 2012, she was diagnosed with a vocal cord polyp and underwent surgery for its removal.[20] She is also a member of the group's sub-unit Rainbow Pixie and Rainbow BLAXX alongside JaeKyung, WooRi and SeungAh. Her color in Rainbow is yellow.[24]
