Rainer Daehnhardt (born December 7, 1941) is a German-Portuguese historian, gun collector, and non-fiction author.

Biography

Origin, early life and education

Some of his ancestors came to Portugal as early as 1706. His grandmother Annemarie (née Wimmer) came from a line from Sankt Annaberg in Lower Silesia and was born in Belas in 1889. His grandfather Heinrich Daehnhardt (1876–1944), who was born in Lisbon, was a professional diplomat and was seriously wounded during World War I at the Battle of Verdun. His father Claus-Heinrich Daehnhardt (1913–1997), born in the German embassy in Constantinople, was drafted into military service as a German abroad during World War II, fought in the Caucasus, and became a Soviet prisoner of war. He managed to escape, reported for duty, was detached to the Western Front and became an American prisoner of war in France.

Rainer Daehnhard was born in Vienna and came with his mother to Portugal from Saxony, then to Hesse and attended the Annie Hamann School in Frankfurt am Main until March 20, 1953. After the year 1957 the family emigrated to Belas. He studied in Germany and Portugal and wrote the thesis Estudo da evolução do Homen atraves da arma e suza utilização ("The study of the evolution of man by the weapon and its use").

Writings

Rainer Daehnhard is President of the Portuguese Society of Ancient Arms and participates in international congresses. He is an honorary member of the American Society of Arms Collectors (A.S.A.C.), a member of the Arms & Armour Society in London and the Gesellschaft für Historische Waffen- und Kostümkunde in Berlin. His collection includes some 500,000 historic hand weapons, harnesses, armor, nautical instruments, nautical charts, coins, manuscripts, etc.

He has written books on, among others, King Sebastian, explorer, sailor and Viceroy of India Vasco da Gama, sailor and explorer of the Straits of Magellan Ferdinand Magellan, who began the first circumnavigation of the world, the Order of the Temple, the Wilhelm Gustloff and the Portuguese horse breed Lusitano.
