Ramnagar is a town in Madhya Pradesh state in central India. It is located on the Son River in Satna District, approximately 60 kilometers from the city of Satna.

The town was affected by Bansagar project. Presently the old town is completely submerged under water and its inhabitants have been relocated to a newly developed and planned town called New Ramnagar. The inhabitants of the submerged town were provided monetary compensation and strips of land in the new town. Allegations of forcible acquisition, insufficient and/or delayed compensation in lieu of the land surrendered by the town's inhabitants have been made.[1][2]

Transport

New Ramnagar is connected to other cities through road links. The nearest National Highway is Jabalpur- Allahabad highway which can be accessed from Amarpatan,20 km away from New Ramnagar. The nearest railway links are Maihar and Satna. Rewa at a distance of 60 km is also a convenient railway station.

Governance

In the past Ramnagar was ruled by Baghelas/ Vaghelas of Rewa District. Presently New Ramnagar is a Gram panchyat of Satna district.

Population

According to the last census the town has a population of 133,393. The majority of the population speaks Bagheli, which is a derivative of Hindi.

Education

The town has middle, primary and high schooling facilities. In 2001 a Government College was established in New Ramnagar which offers Bachelor of Arts course.[3]
