Raymond Bayer

Raymond Bayer (2 September 1898 – 15 July 1959) was a French philosopher and university lecturer.

Biography

Bayer studied philosophy at the École normale supérieure and also attended courses in art history at the Sorbonne. In 1934, he received his doctorate with a thesis on the aesthetics of grace (L'esthétique de la grâce). From 1937 to 1942, he was professor of philosophy at the University of Caen, after which he taught at the Sorbonne until his death.

Bayer was vice-president of the Société française d'esthétique. On the occasion of the Philosophy Congress held in Paris in 1937, he was instrumental in founding the Institut International de Philosophie, together with Åke Petzäll (Lund University, Sweden) and Léon Robin (Paris Sorbonne University).

In 1948, he founded the Revue d'esthétique, in collaboration with Étienne Souriau and Charles Lalo.
