Ríver Atlético Clube, usually known simply as Ríver, is a Brazilian football club from Teresina, Piauí state.

History

On March 1, 1946,[1] the club was founded by Ginásio Leão XIII students, commanded by the teacher Anilthon Soares.[2] The Commendator Dionísio Brochado brought from São Paulo River Plate of Argentina kits, and then, the new club was named after the Argentine club, and adopted its colors and kits.[3] In 1948, two years after the club was founded, Ríver won its first state championship.[4]

In 1977, the club competed in the Brazilian Championship for the first time, finishing in the 41st place.[5] The club competed in the championship again in 1978, finishing in the 69th place,[6] in 1979, finishing in the 83rd place,[7] in 1981, finishing in the 39th place,[8] and in 1982, finishing in the 44th place.[9]

In 2000, Ríver competed in the Copa João Havelange, which was the competition that replaced the Brazilian Championship in that year. The club was in the yellow module (which was that season's equivalent to the second level), and was eliminated in the first stage.[10]
