Robert Carmine Zampano

Robert Carmine Zampano (March 18, 1928 New Haven, CT – January 12, 2004, New Haven, CT) was a Federal Judge for the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut. He has served on the court from 1964 to 1994.

Zampano received a B.A. from Yale University in 1951 and an LL.B. from Yale Law School, in 1954. He was a law clerk, U.S. District Court, District of Connecticut from 1954 to 1955. He then worked for a private practice of law in New Haven, Connecticut from 1955 to 1957, and another in East Haven, Connecticut from 1957 to 1961. During this time, 1957-1960, he was on the town counsel for East Haven, Connecticut. Then from 1956-1961 he was an Executive secretary of Review Division for the Superior Court of Connecticut. He then became a judge for the Town of East Haven from 1959 to 1961. Following this, he was a U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut from 1961 to 1964.

Zampano then became a federal judge for the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut. He was nominated by Lyndon B. Johnson on August 4, 1964, to a seat vacated by Robert P. Anderson, confirmed by the United States Senate on August 15, 1964, and received his commission on August 15, 1964. He assumed senior status on June 1, 1977. His service terminated on April 1, 1994, due to retirement.

Zampano then returned to private practicing law in Connecticut from 1994 to 2004.

Judge Zampano is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothea Gilbridge Zampano; a son, Robert A.; a daughter, Deborah L. Zampano; a sister, Roberta Seipold; and four grandchildren, Michelle Benivenga, Molly Zampano, Rory Zampano and Hannah Zampano.
