Roosevelt High School is a public school located in the Standish neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota. A part of the Minneapolis Public Schools, it is named after United States President Theodore Roosevelt. Athletic and other competition teams from the school are nicknamed the Teddies. Roosevelt has been an International Baccalaureate World School since March 2010, and offers the Diploma Programme as well as the IB Career-related Certificate.
Notable alumni
- Barkhad Abdi – actor, nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the 2013 Academy Awards.[1]
- Peter Agre – molecular biologist, who along with Roderick MacKinnon was awarded Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2003.[2]
- Linda Berglin – long-time Minnesota senator and leader on issues relevant to health and human services.[3]
- Babe Daniels - Professional boxer, whose real name was Ervin Danielsen. As an amateur boxer attending Roosevelt in 1929-30, compiled a record of 25-2-1 and winning the Northwest Golden Glove title at Featherweight in 1930. He fought professionally from 1930-1935, compiling a record of 42-9-3. Babe was managed by the legendary Jack Hurley.
- Dick Daniels - Professional boxer, whose real name was Richard Danielsen. Cousin of Babe Daniels. He fought professionally from 1926-1939, compiling a record of 63-17-7.
- Fortune Gordien – former world record holder in the discus[4]
- Reed Larson – former National Hockey League defenseman, member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.[5]
- John Linsley – performed pioneering research in the field of cosmic rays and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in physics in 1980.[6]
- Larry Munson – collegiate and professional sportscaster
- Mike Ramsey – former National Hockey League defenseman, Olympic gold medalist[7]
- James Rosenquist – one of the protagonists in the pop-art movement[8]
- Don Smith – former Basketball Association of America forward[9]
- Charles Stenvig – former mayor of Minneapolis[10]
- Toni Stone – groundbreaking woman baseball player and Negro league baseball All-Star.
- John Thomas – former National Basketball Association forward.[11]
- Jesse Ventura – professional wrestler, 38th governor of Minnesota, and actor. Known as James Janos while in high school.[12]
