Rubió is a rural municipality in the comarca of the Anoia in Catalonia, Spain. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Rubió. Other villages includes Maçana and El Pla de Rubió. As of 2014, the municipality has 228 inhabitants. At 48 km², it is one of the biggest municipalities of the Alta Segarra, and at one time, had the most reduced population in the entire zone.

The year 1840 the ancient municipality of Maçana annexed to Rubió for fault of population. The municipal limits have not changed from then on.[3]

Name

There are two theories on the origin of the toponym Rubió. The first, says that Rubió is a toponym that derives etymologically of rubeus (coppery), probably doing allusion to the red colour of the land and the rocks of the mountain where built the Castle of Rubió. The second says that the name Rubió derives of the Latin toponym rufus that means blond, through the name Rubione, that was possessor of a property to the zone during the roman period.[4][better source needed]

Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from modern times. They were granted on 12 February 1996. The shield shows to the inferior part a castle of colour of gules with Fleur-of-lis to the centre. To the top there is one mural crown of the village. The castle refers to the castle of Rubió, at present in ruins.

Geography

Rubió situates to the northeast of the comarca of the Anoia, near the geographic centre of Catalonia. The municipality limits with the municipalities of Aguilar de Segarra (Bages), Castellfollit del Boix (Bages), Òdena, Jorba, Copons and Els Prats de Rei. The municipality finds to the centre of the Serra de Rubió, a mountainous chain, as well as to the Altiplà of the Segarra. The highest mountain of the mountain range is the Còpia de Palomes, of 837 metres (2,740 ft) of height.

To the north slope of the Serra de Rubió is born the Maçana river, tributary of the river Llobregat, and to the south slope is born the *riera of Rubió, also tributary of the Llobregat. The municipality is formed by everything of isolated houses all over of the territory, but also includes the cores of population of Rubió and of The El Pla de Rubió.

Rubió is a rich municipality as in vegetal species and animal, for his big extension of forests (70% of the surface of the municipality). The trees that more highlight are the Pinus halepensis, the Pinus nigra and the Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris). In regarding the fauna highlights the build boar (Sus scrofa), the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), the deer (Cervus elaphus) and the roe deer (Caprerolus Caprerolus), between many others. Between the fowls also highlights the falcon.

Climate

The climate of Rubió is a Mediterranean continental climate, with summers with a lot of heat (+35 °C) and winters very cold (-10 °C). The snowfalls, frosted and fogs are very abundant in the winter. In the summer it does a lot of heat, and at any one time the drought can last until two months. The spring and the autumn are the rainiest stations, but in general the precipitations are not very abundant, sooner are irregular, with an annual average precipitation of 680 mm.

Aeolian park of Rubió

To Rubió there is an aeolian park, that is the biggest of Catalonia. It is formed by a total of fifty mills after the last extension (the year 2007) with seventeen new mills that complement the thirty-three that already were in operation. Until the actuality, this aeolian park is considered the aeolian project more important of Catalonia. These aerogenerators are able to produce energy for 30.000 houses. The installation of the aeolian park was to the autumn of 2004, although it went in in operation during the spring of 2005. The aeolian park is in the municipal terms of Rubió (Anoia) and part of the of Castellfollit del Boix (Bages) and Òdena (Anoia).

History

In the municipal term have discovered rests of the human employment since the chalcolithic. Sample of this employment are the two graves megalithic and the roman village.

In the Average Age the Serra de Rubió was delivered between three castles delimited: Rubió, Ardesa, and Maçana. During the 14th century, the village suffered the plague and several bad harvests that did that many lands remained erms and a big part of the rural population displaced to the cities and to the villages next.

At the beginning of the 19th century, during the Peninsular War, the Serra de Rubió was a strategic point for the igualadin resistance. In 1841 the killers Marimon and Casulleres that they led a big split of thieves were trapped by the Mossos d'Esquadra and the civil guard of Rubió. Over there they gave them death in the called «Pla de les bruixes» (Plan of the Witches), after years of loom the peasants of the sides and even villages average how Jorba, Copons, Tous, Santa Margarida de Montbui and Miralles.

Demography

Rubió has 220 inhabitants (2014). It is one of the smallest municipalities of population of the Anoia, since the population of Rubió lives in isolated houses mostly, where the majority of the inhabitants these houses has them for holidays, no to live permanently. The population devotes mostly to the agriculture, being this activity almost the only to the municipality.

Political and government

Rubió is governed at present for Convergència i Unió (CiU) (although the party have separated formally, to the municipalities will continue active this party until the 2019). The mayor is Francesc Miquel Archela Gil, that governs beside the other four councillors of the city council.

Transport

Can access to Rubió in car of the three following manners: the road C-1412, the road BV-1031, the road BV-1037 and the road A-2. In public transport does not reach Rubió. The only way to arrive is since the station of bus of Jorba walking or in taxi.
