SMU School of Accountancy (SOA) is one of the six schools at Singapore Management University (SMU).[1] It was established in 2001, with a cohort of 100 Bachelor of Accountancy (BAcc) students and eight faculty members.[2]

The School of Accountancy offers an undergraduate Bachelor of Accountancy degree programme (BAcc) as well as postgraduate programmes such as the Master of Professional Accounting (MPA) programme and the Master of Science in CFO leadership (MCFO) programme.[3] SMU's undergraduate and postgraduate accountancy programmes are accredited by AACSB International (AACSB).[4] The SMU BAcc and MPA have received accreditations from the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA),[5] the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA), the Singapore Accountancy Commission (SAC), CPA Australia, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA), the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)[6] and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).[7][8]

In 2010, the School of Accountancy Research Centre (SOAR) was established to carry out research in areas such as corporate governance, auditing and accounting information and corporate reporting.[9] Two faculty members were recognized by the 2015 Innovation in Accounting Education Award from the American Accounting Association (AAA)[10]

Undergraduate programme

At the undergraduate level, the SMU School of Accountancy offers a full-time Bachelor of Accountancy programme that can be completed in 3, 3.5 or 4 years. The curriculum is modeled after that of the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton school of business.[11] SMU and the Wharton School of business formed a partnership in 1999, establishing the Wharton–SMU Research Center, and continue to collaborate in areas such as course design and faculty development.[12]

SMU requires undergraduates to complete a minimum of 36 modules, 16 of which fall outside their area of specialization.[13] Students are also required to complete 10 weeks of internship and 80 hours of community service in order to graduate with the Bachelor of Accountancy. Students may elect to pursue a second major or double degree in another discipline. In 2014, 70% of the accountancy cohort graduated with a second major or degree.[14] The School of Accountancy also offers three specialist tracks in Financial Management, Risk Management and Assurance or Taxation.[15]

The SMU MPA was introduced in 2006, and is targeted at executives who wish to pursue in a career in the accountancy sector.[16] The programme is designed to be completed in either one year on a full-time basis or two years on a part-time basis.
