Initially centered on two rows of shophouses, the township has seen significant development, with sprawling housing, and the addition of a new satellite town, the New Salak South Village (Kampung Baru Salak Selatan).

Salak South is also linked to a LRT station (Sri Petaling Line) and a commuter station (KTM Komuter), both named after the township. The two stations are non-interchangeable.
