Samsung Lions (Hangul: 삼성 라이온즈)[1] is a Korea Professional Baseball team founded in 1982. They are based in the southeastern city of Daegu and are members of the Korean Baseball Organization. Their home stadium is Daegu Baseball Stadium. They have won the Korean Series eight times.[2] They are the current Korean champions and also the defending Asia Series champions, becoming the first non-Japanese located team to win the tournament since its inception.
The Samsung Lions won the Korean baseball championship for a third straight year, defeating the Doosan Bears in the deciding seventh game.[3]
The first retired number in the Samsung Lions organization was number 22, in honour of the legendary catcher and slugger, Lee Man-Soo, who was a manager with the SK Wyverns. The second retired number in the Samsung Lions organization is number 10, in honour of the legendary left-handed batter Yang Joon-Hyuk. Yang led the league in batting four times, and holds six batting career records including the home run record with 351. The expected retired number is number 36, in honour of the batter Lee Seung-Yeop, who has returned to the club after a period in the Nippon Professional Baseball.
Julio Franco of the Atlanta Braves once was a member of this team. The team also has an avid following amongst Americans living in South Korea.[4]
After 2010, Ryu Jung-Il become the new manager of Samsung Lions, and he led the team to V5 in 2011. After the KBO league, Samsung Lions won the trophy of Asian Series. Samsung Lions is the first team to won Pennant Race, Korean Series, and Asian Series. In 2012, the legendary player of Samsung Lions, Lee Seung-Yeop returned to Korea from Japan. With his effort, Samsung Lions won the 6th trophy in 2012 season. In 2013, they accomplished V7, and accomplished V8 at 2014.
After the 2010 Season, Ryu Jung-Il become the new manager of Samsung Lions, and he led the team to its 5th KBO Championship in 2011. Samsung followed this up by also winning the 2011 Asian Series. Samsung Lions are the first Korean Team to finish with the best record in the League, and win the Korean Series and Asian Series in the same season. In 2012, Lee Seung-Yeop returned to Samsung Lions after playing in Japan for Yomiuri Giants. With his effort, Samsung Lions won three consecutive Korean Series from 2012 to 2014, their, 6th, 7th, and 8th championships respectively.
